PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19 I am limiting the number of guests to allow for maximum social distancing. Please contact me for larger single parties up to six guests. Thanks for your understanding.
Welcome aboard my Downeaster 38, "Fred B. Wood"! Designed by renowned naval architect, Henry Morschlad, this Downeaster is in exceptionally good condition. Downeaster's are known as being stout and seaworthy bluewater cruisers. They can be found all over the globe. This experience is available for up to six guests! (Please note that I recently upgraded to a larger Downeaster 38 from an Ericson 27 which is shown in some of the photos!)
Your three-hour adventure starts at Jack London Square. The route will depend on wind conditions; however, our goal is to cross the bay to see the marvelous sites of South Beach Harbor (home of the SF Giants), the financial district, the bay bridge, and then Treasure Island. During the tour, you'll see amazing wildlife; including, flocks of pelicans, sea lions, and the occasional dolphin!
This is an active experience! I will review the basics of sailing (wind angle, general terms for operating the vessel, and rules of the road). You will take a turn at the helm (wheel), manage the sheets that control the sails, and raise and lower the sails. Naturally, you are also welcome to just sit back and enjoy the amazing views.

I am a USCG Licensed Captain. I have been a highly rated Airbnb host for four years and have been been around boats my entire life. I have owned and operated many types of sail and powerboats. San Francisco Bay provides beautiful views and wildlife; including harbor seals, dolphins, and amazing birds. In addition, the micro climates in the bay mean you can go from boisterous conditions to nearly tropical calm in just minutes. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with guests!

Where you'll be
We'll depart from historic Jack London Square and (depending on wind conditions) begin our sail in the Oakland Estuary. We'll see the ramps where the Liberty Ships were built by Kaiser shipyards in WW II. As we head west we'll pass by the houseboats of Alameda. We'll then head west and with the wind on our beam cross the bay to see South Beach Harbor, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island before running downwind back to Jack London Square.

We had an amazing sail! David was very helpful in making us feel safe, giving us an opportunity to soak in the bay, and also try our hand at steering the boat. He has such a positive attitude, and surprised us with warm snacks :) I’d definitely do this again!

This is an opportunity to enjoy sailing on the bay with an experienced captain who is thoughtful and friendly. I asked a lot of questions and he was happy to share his knowledge with me. My wife and I sat up front for awhile to feel the wind and take in the beauty around us. We passed massive container ships docked at the Port of Oakland. The wind took us across the Bay smoothly, and the ride back was peaceful and serene. I steered the sailboat on the way back. Loved it, and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks David!
