What you'll do

The Strong Women of the South History Tour is an exploration of historical Charleston from the perspective of the founding mothers and women of every color who contributed to our Great American Dream. Along the way, you will discover the beautiful truth: Charleston is the matriarchal capital of the western world, a city once owned and controlled by women.

Rated as a top Airbnb experience by Charleston Weddings Magazine, this tour is perfect for bachelorettes, couples, locals, and tourists who are looking for something more than a generic city tour.

Our exploration begins at the alleged execution site of America's First Female Serial Killer. We stand in the spot where she met her fate and hear her story. Then, you get to decide: was she really a serial killer or a woman protecting her rights!

Next, we visit the homes and sites of the “Old Maids," Women’s Rights Activists, Printers, Artisans, Madams, Shopkeepers, and Plantation owners while discovering their contributions and conundrums, all written over by modern history. Together, we will roll back time, and see the world from the perspective of women in their time.

Last, we visit the homes and shops of the women who built this great city. We will hear their stories in the contemporary voice of their times. Together, we will smash the myth of the "Fainting Southern Belle," the "Woman behind the man," and Chattel Slavery.

After decades in the financial industry and a stint in academia, 9 years ago, I became a licensed Charleston Tour Guide and 6 years ago an independent operator. I am your Ambassador to a greater understanding and a good time. Once a walking guide, a ghost tour guide, and for 2 years, one of the city's most requested Carriage Drivers, today, I am a writer, a storyteller, and a social activist on the lookout for the hidden messages, overlooked events, and heartfelt meaning of the world around us, dedicating myself to sharing stories of empowerment: The stories of the Strong Women of the South.

Where you'll be

We start our experience in the Harleston Village neighborhood at the Old City Jail, exploring around some of the grandest palaces still standing in the city. Next, we stop at the homes of Women’s Rights Activists, Old Maids, Artists, and Shopkeepers. Last, we move into the business district where women controlled and influenced the shops and bordellos of the old city.

We had three adult women, a teen, and a five-year-old in a stroller on the tour. We agreed this was one of the highlights of our vacation. Larry shared his passion about our nation's history through the lens of strong, brave women (and the men who emboldened them). There was so much information that we hung on every word. Larry is a lively storyteller who invited us into the discussion. Loved the advice and encouragement to our young girls. Don't think twice about booking this tour! You'll leave thinking more about history's power of the pen.

We came across Larry's tour as a recommendation when we booked our trip to Charleston. Larry provides a unique perspective and obviously has learned everything he can about his beloved city. We left with many memories and new knowledge of an already interesting city. He respects humanity and wants everyone who had an impact on history to have their stories known. We all left with his quote in our mind about measuring people by good and smart. Wonderful experience, would highly recommend!

Adaptable, flexible, very deeply knowledgeable! Funny and entertaining! He’s great with young kids and very accommodating - so if you find young ones getting restless, Larry takes feedback in stride and moves things along. We had some very young ones and never felt uncomfortable! Thanks, Larry, for coming out on Christmas Day to lead our family through your tour stepping back in time! Loved learning about the remarkable historic women of Charleston. These stories need to be told! Larry is truly a part of the whole Charleston experience!

This tour was an absolutely incredible experience. The stories were interesting and riddled with history, and Larry did an amazing job interconnecting everything and engaging us actively throughout the entire thing. What we thought would be a point-to-point typical tour with some interesting architecture thrown in was more of an adventure through 200 years of rich Charleston history. Take this tour, you won't regret it.
