What you'll do

Venice Beach is a vibrant town with a bohemian vibe and free-spirited locals. See its true colors by walking through my neighborhood streets and visiting beautiful community garden boxes. All boxes are managed and cared for by the local nonprofit I co founded.

We will meet to fuel up on organic joe, or if you prefer decaf, at our infamous local coffee spot. Then, off we go as I lead you around the streets of Venice. We'll be visiting the various garden food boxes and I'll be teaching you how to plant, harvest, and even compost. You'll leave this experience inspired by community gardens and with some goodness to take home with you: freshly grown produce from Venice.
Other things to note
Bring your own camera. Wear a hat, sneakers, and sunblock.

An advocate for environmental and human health, I am an urban farmer on a mission to guide the next generation into meaningful action. I am deeply rooted and knowledgable in sustainability and climate action. I reside in Venice with my fiance and our two pets for over eight years. I love my community, getting dirty, and I am happy to guide you also where to go eat, hang, and ride bikes along the ocean after our session.

Great experience! My boyfriend and I started gardening at home and felt like we could use more knowledge. Nicole met us at a coffee shop and we walked to some near by community gardens beds. She was so fun and full of energy! We planted herbs, flowers & some veggies. Nicole educated us on what grows well together and homemade bug repellents.

Nicole is such a caring and loving person full of passion towards not only her own life but also the social and environmental developments. Although I was super late for the class, she still warmly welcome me with a big smile and treated me a cup of organic hot latte. Due to my late coming, we didn’t have time to actually plant, harvest and compost the vegetables, but we went through the history of Venice Beach and her devoted purpose of founding the Community Healing Garden to make a sustainable and organic lifestyle of everyone living this area, as well as to help the neighbourhood rebuild friendships and trust since its economic rise in 2011. She showed me her small woodboxed gardens by the street and picked some fresh veggie for me to take at home. We also found butterflies and caterpillars in some of the boxes and we were surprised because nowadays it’s not a usual thing to see these beautiful creatures again in the city. Nicole was happy that she brought nature back to Venice Beach and I think all her efforts deserve people to come and know. She is great! I get inspired a lot and I am very looking forward to coming and talking with her again.

It is so inspiring to hear how Nicole started this community healing garden. The story also gave us some background about the Venice, which I found very informative. We did some gardening and received the therapeutical benefits, together with a little hands-on knowledge about urban farming. I recommend the experience - put on some sunscreen as I got some pretty bad burn working directly under the sun.

It was good to get an inside appreciation of the Venice community and to learn skills to establish your own eco urban garden.

Nicole is amazing! She is super insightful on sustainability and the local economy; she knows the neighborhood and community members like the back of her hand. You can tell she truly cares for all those who reside in Venice, and general LA area, especially now during these times of change. I can't wait to go back and garden with her and Steve again, as I feel well acquainted with the Venice Community Gardens, and truly feel apart of their mission for overall connectedness. Sending big hugs until then! Thanks Nicole :)

Nicole led me and another guest on an urban adventure. She guided us around her Venice gardening community for half an hour and then I dived right in as a horticulturalist helper for 1.5 more hours, working with her community volunteers on peas, sunflowers, and many other interesting veggies. I would recommend everyone out there to make peas, not war. Really, you've got to give peas a chance!
