What you'll do

“Forage your 5-a-day for free & make your own bespoke herb tea!”
Put on your walking shoes & come exploring the local wild plants of the Peak District. We will learn medicinal, culinary & other uses for many of the plants we find, brought to life with history, Folk-lore & anecdotes. Be prepared for the world to look a little different when you return, since you will probably be astonished just how interesting so many of our common wild plants are!
These Herb Walks are relaxed & gentle, normally lasting about 2 hours, with plenty of time to stop & get to know the plants, including tasting & making tea with them where appropriate!
Grindleford is surrounded by amazing walks, with Padley Gorge woodland river, Padley Chapel, & Bolehill Quarry’s magical oak & birch woodlands. We will be spoiled for choice which way to go & can decide together!
At the end of the Walk Experience, Grindleford Station Cafe is an Experience unto itself, with delicious chips & magnificent all day breakfasts!
Our meeting point is next to Grindleford train station, with regular trains from Sheffield & Manchester.
COVID UPDATE: If you would like to make a wild herb tea, please bring your own flask of boiling water. Due to COVID safety precautions, I will no longer provide refreshments until further notice. Guests are required to keep 2 meters apart from anyone who is not “in their social bubble”.

I am a qualified & experienced Medical Herbalist, with a BSc. Hons in Herbal Medicine. I won the National Institute of Medical Herbalists "Dorothy Carole Award for Best Final Clinical Exam" in 2016. I have lived in the Hope Valley, Derbyshire for over 20 years, and have always spent a lot of time walking dogs & foraging. I have a profound understanding of plants, having also also been a gardener & created my own Forest Garden.
I have a BA in Modern Languages, & enjoy researching the history & folk lore of our local wild plants. I also practice Equine Facilitated Learning, & am a beekeeper.

Where you'll be

Grindleford is a great place for autumn & winter walking. Spoilt for choice, we can follow the river up Padley Gorge, Walk to Padley Chapel & the ruins of Padley Manor, or head up into the silver birch woodlands with views over the Valley....
We finish our walk at Grindleford Station Cafe, where an open fire burns through the winter months, and its chips & huge all day breakfasts (with vegetarian options) are second to none!

anna is a knowledgeable and kind guide into the world of plants and their uses. she looked after our interests and made sure we were getting all that we could out of our time in the peaks district. i would take this walk again with her and would be certain to learn a whole set of new things.

Thank you Anna for a very unique experience. It was clear you have a real in depth knowledge on your subject and you bought that to life for me! I really enjoyed learning about all the plants and their gifts, thank you so much.

Anna took us on a magical learning adventure through the world of useful plants, some of which can be found right on our doorstep! Our walk through the Grindleford woodlands felt like a journey through time as we explored the mythological, historical and modern day uses of herbs and fungi. We had the opportunity to make a rejuvenating tea with our ‘forest findings’ and shared some gluten free snacks with Pepper, Anna’s canine companion. Would 100% recommend to others. Thank you Anna!

We took a long walk starting from Grindleford Station and up through the woodlands, following paths we just wouldn’t have followed on our own, with lots of knowledge about herbs and stories from Anna on route. Very interesting, relaxed and fun, with a stop off for snacks and herbal tea before descending as the sun set, in a bright red sky. Pretty sure the walk was longer than originally planned and Anna was happy to take the longer route round to show is more amazing scenery! Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and Anna’s company and knowledge and would definitely recommend! Thanks Anna for a lovely day and hopefully see you next time we visit! (Which we hope will be soon!!)
