What you'll do
During this Experience we will collect wild Hawaiian salt along the coast of Maui, clean it, and package it for you to take home.
We will meet to get acquainted and carpool to the place where we will collect salt that day. Weather conditions are hugely important : we are looking for the right combination of seawater, sun, and wind.
When we get to our destination, we will begin to walk along the coastline looking for areas where the waves have washed up on the lava or rocks, and that's when we will start to gather our salt. We will gather the salt in a traditional Hawaiian collection method, using great care not to touch or pollute it. Next, we mark the exact location of each place where we gathered salt, using the name of the traditional Hawaiian Ahu'pua'a (district) and place name. Time permitting, we can add flavor such as smoke, pepper, etc. Then we will label it for you to take home!
When we have gathered our salt, we will pause for some refreshments like juicy fresh mango & pineapple, and a swim in the ocean if you would like.
I look forward to sharing my favorite pastime with you!
Other things to note: This is an active experience that involves walking along a windy coastline in the sun. Make sure to protect yourself from the sun, and don't forget your camera!

Aloha, I'm Sarah!
I grew up on here on Maui. I attended the University of Hawaii and worked for the Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources. Salt hunting is one of my favorite hobbies. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world while exploring the island!

Where you'll be
Hawaiian sea salt is collected from rocky shoreline pools, where it occurs as a result of natural solar evaporation.
We will be collecting salt along the coastline in Kihei. The exact location will depend on weather conditions that day. That's part of the fun of salt collecting!

This experience was so amazing that I don’t even know where to begin. If it was possible to give more than 5 stars, I definitely would. Usually when you think of Maui, the most obvious experiences that come to mind are snorkeling and luaus. Of course, those are great but this salt collecting experience reveals a whole different side of Hawaii. I also think its name, salt collecting experience, is a bit misleading, you do of course get to collect a hefty bag of salt but you also get a tour of remote lava fields and beautiful bays, a history lesson on the area from a local (Sarah), transportation, POG, and more! If you don’t care about salt, you should still do this experience! It is literally a 3 hour cultural immersion from a local with salt as an added bonus LOL! Oh and Sarah is literally the foremost expert on the lava fields/nature preserve because SHE USED TO RUN ITS CARETAKING PROGRAM! The value for this experience is mind boggling... I am frankly confused as to why Sarah doesn’t charge hundreds of dollars for this experience as that is what it is worth. This experience exceeded my expectations in every way. It was so unbelievably good I’m not sure I didn’t make it up. Thank you for everything, Sarah!

This experience was great! Sarah is a local who has worked for the state and has incredible knowledge of the island and its treasures. Hunting for salt was such a unique experience and I loved how we thoughtfully sorted through it and presented it in the end. She also took great pictures.

My husband and I had such a great time harvesting salt with Sarah. She was kind enough to adjust the time of the experience based on our work schedule. We met her in a public park and then carpooled to the harvesting spot. Along the way, she shared stories and information about the area and told us about the landscape and the history of the ancient Hawaiians who first inhabited the area. We were able to harvest a nice amount of salt and also serving vessels. Afterwards, she took us to an old church where we offered thanks . We ended with some juice and snacks and she gave us instructions on how to dry our harvest. Sarah is really funny and a very positive person to be around. It was so much fun and a truly unique experience.
