What you'll do
We meet at our designated meeting location where we will carpool to the hiking location. The hike is 70% deer trail with your guide who has hiked the area for over 10 years. Specific focus will be brought to stop and talk about the native types of plants, we will identify key plants, mushrooms, and trees, we will potentially see native orchids or other wildflowers depending on the season, we will stop frequently along this hike to discuss the usefulness of wild foraging foods, and specific focus will be brought to culinary mushroom varieties that bloom in this season. I know my regular patches for seasonal mushrooms and wild foraged food so the actual hike location will vary depending on which week of the year it is. Every week is a new hike, every hike is seasonally planned with precision around the environmental factors that bring out the best experience. Length: 6 miles Duration: up to 4 hours* this event may run late Items to bring: Bag lunch, 32 oz water, snacks, backpack, paper bags for forage collection, pen or pencil to write the names on the bags, notebook to take notes, good hiking shoes and socks, hat, gloves Optional: binoculars, camera, walking stick
Avid enthusiast in mycology and expert hiker will take you on our adventure to known spots for wild forage and mushroom picking. I teach identification techniques and uses of wild-found food forage in this area. This is a rare opportunity to gain the skills of foraging in the forest, identifying culinary mushrooms, cleaning and preparing the mushrooms right after the foray. Your host is also a registered nurse and nutrition consultant locally practicing holistic nutrition care and management and can talk on medicinal uses of mushrooms as well
