What you'll do

(Please Inquire with your desired date and I'll open de calendar for that day if available)

My Tasting Experience was created to show you Valparaiso through its local Food and Wines. We'll visit places such as Bakeries, Delicatessens, Farmer's Markets and Pastry shops, and then take the products to my private cellar, called "Caoba Tasting Room", where we'll open three wines in order to taste and pair with the food.
We'll talk a bit about history, identity, and local traditions, which have shaped the way we "Porteños" live, and how foreign influence has been present in our table since the early 19th century.
The Tour normally consists of snack-size food, which we in Chile call "picoteo", and not elaborate dishes, with the intention of keeping the tour at a good pace.
We open one white and two reds, and taste varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Rielsing, Chardonnay or Viognier, as well as Pinot Noir, Merlot, Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Syrah. I usually work with full varietals (not many blends, unless the food could use that touch), and the wines are in the Reserva and Gran Reserva range.
The wines vary in region, but they are all Chilean wines.
Other things to note
If I'm not personally available due to any last minute problems, the tour will be carried by one of my colleagues.
Do not bring flashy jewelry as this is a busy and centric part of town.

I got into wine in 2007, and started taking people to the wineries of Casablanca then. I later studied at the Chilean Sommelier school and got my degree there.
I wasn't a big fan of massive tastings at the wineries, so a few years ago, I created my private urban cellar, with wines I had been saving for years, and got a permit to teach private classes (the cellar holds no more than 5 people). I'm a graffiti artist /urban artist, so I painted the outside with some of my art, and gave the inside a small touch of graffiti to go with the wine theme.

Where you'll be

One of the places I like to visit before going to the tasting room or en-route to the Tasting Room is Barrio Puerto. Barrio Puerto is an area that is lesser-known, unless you're a local, and it's the oldest area of the city. Unfortunately not many tours go there because not many people know where to go, so I designed a special route that stops at a couple of locations where we get some snacks to pair with the Wine.

My afternoon with Alvaro was wonderful! We met at a cafe in Valparaiso... from there we went to a few “foodie” markets, including a cheese shop and an old fashioned meat shop. Alvaro bought a few things in each place in preparation for our tasting. We took a bus and then a funicular as we headed up the hill to his tasting room. On our way he showed me some street art- his own work, and the work of his friends. At the tasting we had a few kinds of Chilean jellies, some bread, pate, meats and cheeses.. and of course wine! The entire experience was great- it was all thoughtfully planned out. Alvaro really knows his food and wines, and is very personable and easy to get along with. This was one of the best afternoons I had in Chile!

Al was an awesome guide -- he conveyed a true passion for the city and its cultural and economic history. Valparaiso our last stop after spending time in the north and the south of Chile, and it was a great wrap up to hear from a local entrepreneur and renaissance man who has a deep knowledge of the city's dynamics (along with it's art, food and wine!).

Sommelier, perfectly English speaking, has guided us through a short city walk and well planned wine and food tasting. All presented Wines were excellent quality and a good choice to represent Chile as a wine lovers paradise. Special thanks to Alvaro for the experience!

There aren’t enough words to describe my experience with Alvaro. He spoke with such passion about his city of Valparaiso whether it was mind blowing street art that he did or knows people who did or to the historical significance of the buildings around us. When it came to the passion of his which is wine, he taught me things about the history of wine and the significance of it to present day. In our adventure we did all of the small markets and I learned about different pairings of food to the wine we were about to have. Once we sit down and pair the two it is such a flavourful experience cause you can see what he was talking about. My mind has been blown about what I experienced. If we are doing the star rating system I’d totally give 5 out 5 but like I said there aren’t enough words to say on how great it was.

We had a great time with Alvaro as he is a multi talented man! Sommelier, guide tour and a graffiti artist. We did few stops in and around Cerro Allegre to pick-up some specialty snacks to pair with the three (great) wines. On our way Alvaro told us about the story of the town and the local neighborhood and it was very interesting. Once in his workshop we were comfortably seated and Alvaro presented the wines and had the snacks we purchased ealier. Alvaro is knowledgeable, experienced and perfectly fluent in english. We strongly recommend this wine tasting experience and would even do it again shout we come back to Valpo.

Great experience. Very cool to see local markets that we would never have gone to otherwise. Very generous pours on the tasting. Highly recommend!
