What you'll do

If you arrive by train, we collect you from Baldock Station; back at our cottage we discuss your expectations for the day, find boots/jackets and you can be pestered by the puppy. Over a welcoming drink and a snack (arrive hungry please!) you can tell us your riding experience; we pay serious attention to evaluating the characters of each rider as we aim to provide you with the ideal equine partner for your day with us.
Having signed a disclaimer and had a hat fitted you’ll meet your horse and be shown how to (nominally) groom, tack up and do ground work using the same voice commands you'll be using once riding. After mounting (comfortable saddles) there’s a 45/50 minute session outside on paths or fields then a home made lunch so you can relax and process what you’ve learned, followed by another 45/50 minute hack out.
We can go as slowly as you like, you won’t be pushed out of your comfort zone! Forgive us in advance for putting the horses’ happiness first :-) - but your experience of viewing the world through the ears of a willing happy horse could start you on a really wonderful equine adventure.
For genuinely experienced riders we might ride with you to a pub where there’s a small paddock for the horses to graze.
If you’re able to come on a weekday we’re currently offering a ten pc discount (cash back on arrival as it’s too complicated to organise on the website!).

This experience involves learning how to ride a horse using your voice (no kicking or pulling)!. We’ve spent the last thirty years training horses, riding very long distances all over the world, sorting out people’s ‘problem ponies!’ and teaching nervous beginners. I’m a qualified riding instructor, we both love yoga which we use within our riding. We are saddened by the normal way people are taught to ride - horses are not machines! Maximum 3 riders per session so NO large groups where everyone just follows the lead horse. We limit the experience to just nine people per week so that the horses keep enjoying it! We run a very ethical yard - the horses (mostly arabs) are unshod, living outside in a herd. We love cooking and make bread daily; Richard grows all our vegetables and our hens provide the eggs so lunch means minimum food miles.

Where you'll be

We take you on a personal adventure to horsemanship - which can be very different from just riding. We teach you to experience the world from the horses’ point of view. But we’re happy to point out badger setts, fox holes, local fauna and the jackdaw tree. It should be a unique experience on gentle, sensitive horses who enjoy going out. Companionable silence is also an option if preferred - we want you to have the best, relaxed time possible

A fantastic and magical experience!! It’s very rare to receive such a personalised experience where you are so much part of someone’s family home life. Couldn’t recommend more! A wonderful break from the current madness and we will definitely return very soon. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Nicky and Richard are terrific hosts! We absolutely had a fantastic experience with them. They were very patient with us and gave clear instructions on how to get along well with the horse and pony. We were totally inexperienced with horses and after half an hour, we could do rising trot by ourselves, which is amazing. The food prepared by Nicky is great and delicious. Especially the homemade icecream! Overall, we had a wonderful experience with Nicky and Richard and we highly recommend this to those who are interested in a personal and professional horse riding experience.

Nicky and Richard were fantastic down-to-earth hosts. The weather wasn't cooperating when we went for our experience so we will come back to do the riding portion another time (no extra charge). Even though we didn't ride, we still met the horses and had a delicious lunch. We chatted by the fire for a couple of hours enjoying each other's company.

We had a wonderful day. The hosts were fantastic, welcoming and so patient as we were both first time riders. The horses are so lovely and definitely go with an empty stomach! The food was amazing! Will definitely be going back.

After reading the other reviews, this seemed like a perfect way to celebrate my birthday so I booked and took my 6 year old and my best friend. We had an amazing time from start to finish, the hosts took so much time to make us feel welcome and introduce us to their world. They love their horses and other animals and it is a pleasure to be in such a peaceful environment. I learned more about horses here than I have at any other riding stables in the UK. The riding was very relaxed, but a lot to learn to ride in a more considerate way than before. We took a break for lunch and as promised, it was amazing - home-cooked and all from the garden. We had provided some dietary requirements beforehand and they went to great lengths to meet our requirements, and particuarly liked that they had considered my 6 year old and had various options for her. I was concerned the riding would be too much for my 6 year old as she'd only done a few minutes of pony riding before but she was absolutely delighted with her beautiful medicine hat pony and she didn't want to go home! As we were a mix of beginners, we mostly walked and concentrated on our form and our bond with the horses with a little bit of trotting from time to time. Fabulous experience not far from London that I'd recommend to anyone. If only we lived closer we'd be there every week!

Nicky and Richard treated us to a very special afternoon in their home and with their various animals. They clearly care immensely about their horses wellbeing and their approach to riding reflects this. The horses are very calm and Nicky and Richard were careful and attentive teachers. Despite having just a little riding experience ourselves, we felt very comfortable and in good hands and much more confident riders by the end. We also had a delicious home made lunch and wine. Definitely recommend.
