What you'll do

Join me as we explore London's wild spaces after dark to discover the amazing world of bats. As dusk falls, mysterious creatures emerge from under bridges and out of old trees to hunt. Surrounded by myth and misconceptions, bats are a truly unique group of animals, and much misunderstood.

The focus will be on learning all about bats and their unique biology, why they are so important as ecological 'keystone species', how they navigate in the dark and how each species is highly adapted to its way of life. We'll watch them hunting in various habitats, and excitingly we will use handheld electronic bat detectors to listen to their ultrasonic echolocation calls.

You'll learn how to identify various species, from the tiny flitting Pipistrelles that can fit into a matchbox, to the incredible and comical looking Brown Long Eared bat. With luck, we may spot the Daubenton's or water bat skimming the water surface like a tiny hovercraft. Or our largest bat, the Noctule, almost bird-like flying in open skies with it's military 'chip-chop' call.

We frequently encounter other nocturnal wildlife too, like owls, foxes, hedgehogs and badgers. Who knows what the evening will reveal!
Other things to note
For now, please wear masks. Social distancing can be observed, bat detectors wiped down between uses. The walk is very safe as many joggers and walkers use the Heath to cut through, even in late evenings. We'll be sticking to wide open paths for the most part, but need to take care of trip hazards

I'm a lifelong nature lover, who loves to teach people about wildlife, ecology and the amazing natural wonders that are often on our doorstep without us realising! I'm a vet, biologist and conservationist. Whether it hops, flaps, jumps, slithers, flies or crawls, chances are I can tell you an interesting fact about it.
Self confessed wildlife nerd, who believes in the power of nature & outdoor therapy. I'm at the fun, lively end of the biogeek spectrum, not the boring, bookish end. A walk in the wilderness followed by a few beers and great chats afterwards is my ideal day or evening out.

I had a great time on this bat walk in Hampstead Heath. Never did I realise that there were so many bats in London! Sean is very friendly and knowledgeable (about bats but also nature in general) and is happy to answer any questions, however silly they might be! Overall it was a great experience. Recommended.

I took my bat obsessed 5 year old daughter on this as a special treat for extra good behaviour. Sean made the reward absolutely magical! We both learned fascinating facts about bats and the setting in the Heath felt like a real London memory! We saw 3 different kinds and detected a few more! We even spotted some skinny dippers! Brilliant, memorable experience - highly recommended!

Bat-tastic! I booked for myself and a friend and we had the best evening, Sean was welcoming and friendly.. the guy really knows his stuff and we felt comfortable asking questions. We managed to see 6 different species and it blew us both away. Really came away from it feeling like I learnt a lot. Have already recommended to other friends and I would probably do it again! Thanks Sean.

The bat walk with Sean was great. He really knows his stuff and approached all conversation, instruction and information with a passionate, non-judgemental and friendly way. He is personable and kind, and a good sense of humour to boot. I was with a really small group, but there was no awkwardness and everyone was involved. We were particularly lucky too, as we had a night where there were dozens of bats spotted. I don't know Hampstead Heath very well, so this introduction to the area was fantastic too.

Sean is a wealth of knowledge! His passion for animals and the outdoors was obvious for the start. He provided great background knowledge and I definitely learned lots (species of bats, niches they occupy, how to use the sonar equipment, and lots of great facts!). We used some cool equipment and had great success with seeing loads of bats! It’s an opportunity to stop and realise the amazing wildlife that we have in London that you often don’t spend much time noticing. The night went by in a flash we were having so much fun! I would recommend bringing your own torch so that you can ‘follow’ the bats- Sean will explain :). The park felt very safe and I would 100% recommend this experience to friends.
