What you'll do

This is a practical hands on Blacksmith taster session. You will make three small items such as a forge welded heart, a poker, toasting fork, small hooks or key rings for example. Whilst doing so you will learn different forging techniques as well as how to work with the fire and how to use different tools and there names. Sessions are kept small there is a maximum number of 2 students in a session, this means that you get the most of my time. A session will last around 6 hours, so there's plenty of forge time to enjoy.

I have been a blacksmith for over 15 years and taught in colleges, schools (as far as Switzerland up in the alps), muesums, music festivals including Glastonbury. I have made ironwork for English Heritage and I have also made sculptural work for Chelsea Flower Show. Until recently I have always rented a workshop which has been quite limiting, but now I have bought my own workshop and wish to share my passion for making stuff out of iron.

Where you'll be

The blacksmith work will take place in my traditional stone barn, it feels like stepping back in time. The workshop is situated next to my traditional Irish cottage which I am restoring which is in the Glen of Aherlow at the foot of the Galtee mountains, it has the most amazing views.

Fantastic day! My partner, 6 year old daughter and I spent the day with Rich and Jane. Cannot fault them at all. So friendly, made us feel welcome from the start. Rich was very knowledgable about his trade and shared this with us. Honestly can say this is by far the best experience we have done. We are home with some lovely handmade items but more so with the great memories of making them.

This was a wonderful experience for our 4 young children! Richard was very kind and patient. All 4 children walked away with something they helped make! A good time was had by all.

Richard is an extremely patient and kind teacher. I was a bit nervous going into it, since I have never tried blacksmithing before, it’s is a traditionally masculine craft, and I knew next to nothing about the instructor before I showed up. Richard did an excellent job creating an enriching experience, and I feel like I learned a great deal about blacksmithing while gaining hands-on experience. I would recommend this experience to anyone, including children. Richard was able to personalize the experience to me, and together we crafted objects I was excited to make!

Really fun experience and definitely worth trying, even if you don't believe you are very practical or hands on.
