What you'll do

Join our masterclass to shoot actual film on Super 8 and learn how to develop it yourself using washing soda, vitamin C and coffee. Participants will be lent Super 8 cine-cameras and given an hour to shoot footage... documentary, drama, silent comedy, experimental; the choice is yours! Then using household items and a few darkroom chemicals, workshop leader Ben Slotover will show participants how to develop the Super 8 film themselves.
Finally the films will be dried, spooled and projected for that rare treat – same day viewing of freshly shot film footage!

There will be a wide variety of Super 8 cameras to choose from, catering to all levels of expertise.

Timetable:

10am-12 noon, Filming
-Tuition on the cameras
Participants go off and film stuff.

12 noon-1pm Lunch
Participants bring their own

1pm-5pm Processing
- Developing film
- drying, spooling film

5pm- Project films
End

If you want to bring a camera of your own to test out, you can. Otherwise everything will be provided for you. Because of the staining nature of some of the chemicals being used, old clothes are recommended. It would be very handy to know if you have any previous experience shooting or processing super

This was a really exciting workshop - we fully developed a reel of film I shot 15 years ago (and finished on a walkabout during the day) which I'd presumed was unsalvageable, and it looks amazing. I came away with full understanding of two different developing processes for 8 & 16mm b&w film, so I can now confidently process my films at home. He also has a ridiculously good camera collection which was a lot of fun to go through. Thanks Ben, couldn't have gone better!

Ben is such a lovely instructor. The workshop was held in his kitchen which had more than enough space to do everything. The workshop was initially supposed to be only 6-7 hours long (10am-5pm), but it was extended by another 3 hours because I was so curious about everything and I was a little slow with choosing what I would like to film. Ben didn’t mind the extra time used for the workshop and I really appreciate that. Not only was he extremely kind and thoughtful, he was also very accommodating (I wanted to grab a bite at McDonald even though it took out time from our workshop, but he didn’t mind it at all, and also accompanied me there). I had so much fun just getting to play around with his equipment, making the film, and developing the film. It was the best experience I had signed up for in London for sure!! Anybody that’s really interested in Super 8 film or Standard 8 must hit him up! Thank you Ben for the wonderful day, it was absolutely amazing :)

An absolutely wonderful, hands on experience! I'd recommend this to anyone remotely interested in Super 8. Whether you have a background in film, either motion or photography, or you're a beginner... Ben will explain it all and teach you everything you need to know (and then some). There's a plethora of Super 8 cameras to choose from, each one is a bit different so you'll find something within your skill level and comfort quite easily. We explored a few neighborhoods near Regent's Park to shoot the 1/2 roll of Super 8 before heading back to develop the film. You'll learn a ton about developing, scanning, and post-production... and you'll leave with your very own short. In post production, Ben brought out markers to draw on the film, which added a little animation. This was an all-day experience and I'd absolutely do it again next time I'm in London.
