What you'll do

Intro class will focus on creating the indigo vat using pre-reduced indigo, while talking about all natural indigo and the history of the process. 8 traditional Japanese dyeing techniques will be shown including Suji, Itajime, Kanoko, Tegumo, Ne-Maki and Arashi. Pick the few you're drawn to and have fun! Each student will get to dye minimally 3 pieces.

All materials provided, but students are welcome to bring their own projects.
Clean, white or lightly colored natural fibers (such as cotton, silk, or wool) work best, but be respectful with the size of item. Leave with one-of-a-kind fibers to keep or share!

Hi there, I'm Karin, a hands on textile designer and maker! Myself and my little dog Kyle work in my building in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It's a creative and artistic neighborhood with lots a good places to eat close by (Roberta's Pizza, Shinobi Ramen) and Sey coffee roasters next door. The place is called Better Than Jam's Store & Studio and has been running since 2010. The storefront hosts many locally made products and behind the store, sits the extensive studio. There I teach workshops, create my own line named "Better Than Jam," but also host other artists, makers, and craftspeople.

Loved loved loved this! So much fun and very magical to see how your dyeing choices literally unfold into beautiful patterns. Very hard to make something ugly so recommend for creatives and for those who don’t think they are creative. Karin is incredibly knowledgeable and sweet. Will be back soon!! It was the best.

Karin was a wonderful teacher. She was very knowledgable about all aspects of shibori dying. She was patient, kind, and encouraging. I took the class with a friend and we were both very excited about what we learned and produced. I would suggest running through your home storage or Goodwill to get some pieces, like tshirts, or pillow cases to dye. We wished we'd come more prepared. But Karin has fabric provided so we were covered. I highly recommend taking her full 3 hour class.

Karin is very knowledgeable and patient. I was the only person in my class, and I feel very lucky to have gotten to ask so many questions one-on-one. What’s more, I got to walk away with an actual object and a wonderful memory. This was my first Airbnb “experience” and I totally recommend it. You will not regret it! 🙂🌟💙

Karin is a fantastic teacher. Super approachable and she made sure everyone had what they needed. For something like dying shirts, it can be weirdly intimidating - Karin showed some great techniques and everyone's stuff came out great! 100% will recommend to others

What to bring
