What you'll do

Within an hour, even as a beginner, you will learn to make three Chinese dishes. I will guide and show you each step of the way and let you give it a try. I will also teach you cooking methods used in Chinese cuisine, using my family recipes. It is like realizing it is your chances to discover all the ‘secret ingredients” your mom kept from you as a child. After cooking, we will enjoy the delicious meal we cooked together. From Shanghai classics such as Shanghai Style Rice with Ham & Mustard Green, Shanghai Wonton to seasonal Shanghai vegetable such as Sautéed Mushroom with Tofu Pocket and Scallion, Celtuce appetizer. Vegetarians have no shortage of dishes to try.

See how much fun it is on Youtube! https://youtu.be/mIy0XVrHJSs

Here is my secret: I used to pack lunches for my children to take to school, just like my mom did. Except now, despite their exotic cooking books from around the world and youtube channels, I still get skype calls and emails from my kids about recipes, ingredients and disaster recovery advice.

I am a Shanghai mom, my hobbies include making food that no one eats and counting to 3. Cooking with mom was the first tradition my mom passed down to me, from her own mother. I have been doing this for 60 years, with my mom, my kids and now with my guests, from a Japanese food blogger to honeymooners from the US. It will be a fun project for us, we will work as a team in the kitchen. It is one of those special moments you get to feel like a kid again. And yes, this time (only) you can lick your spoon.

The best decision we ever made was to sign up for this amazing home-cooking experience. We were looking for an authentic cooking class in which we would learn truly authentic Shanghai cuisine with dishes that we would actually cook at home, instead of the usual touristic dishes. In Charlize’s comfortable home which is outside the city Center in a very green and quiet area, we were introduced to so so many delicious dishes. She uses only high quality ingredients and this is where you will immediately taste the difference: the flavours are light and varied instead of the usual monotone heavy sauces you will often find in restaurants. The atmosphere was so sweet, intimate and personal -such a great feeling during our trip. We felt like we were being cared for by a mummy and left feeling very full, happy and cozy. Thank you so much!!

We had the most wonderful couple of hours chatting and cooking with Charlize and Mr Zhao. It was such a privilege to be welcomed into a real Shanghai home, to be treated as family and to hear about local ingredients and life in Shanghai. Charlize’s food was amazing- lots of lovely fresh ingredients that I had never tried before, and she prepared them beautifully. We even got to make our own dumplings. Altogether, a great introduction to Chinese cooking and a very special and unique experience with local Shanghaiers that we won’t forget!

Charlize was an incredibly welcoming host and we left with unforgettable memories of our cooking class! She taught us how to make baozi (dumplings) and was even able to tailor the menu to accommodate a few special requests. It doesn’t get more authentic than Charlize, who grew up in Shanghai and has been cooking this same food for her own family for decades.

A taste of Shanghai you won’t get anywhere else. Charlize welcomed me into her home and made me feel like family. She is the Chinese auntie I didn’t know I had. Some of the dishes we made are ones I haven’t seen in any restaurant in Shanghai. The best part was sharing a meal with Charlize and enjoying the fruits of our labor. Can not recommend highly enough for a home-grown, unique outing. This is what all Airbnb experiences should be!

Absolutely wonderful food and explanations. Beautiful presentation. Had no idea most of the vegetables used even existed, let alone would be so yummy.
