What you'll do

Forget those pre-scripted, crowded, boring touristy tours! In my walking tours, I use my creativity and knowledge to adjust the tour according to your interests and preferences, the group size and the weather conditions; so you will get the best of Helsinki. We will walk together in and around the city center, discovering Helsinki's secrets, learning its history, culture and traditions. Why do Helsinki people have picnic on top of graves? What was the meeting point of the bohemian people of 1880s in Helsinki? How did they build a church inside a giant granite rock? Where did Lenin hide when he was running away from the Tsarist Russia? Which statue is the one that seagulls hate the most? Where did they bury thousands of bodies during the plague? Why is the largest Orthodox cathedral located in a Lutheran country? Where can you eat the best salmon soup of your life? Why Finnish people still cheer for the opponents of the Swedish national football team? How did a Finnish architect influence generations of American architects and skyscraper designs? We will find answers to all of these questions and more, while visiting each of these important locations in Helsinki.
Other things to note
Be prepared to walk 6-7 km and come with comfortable walking shoes and extra layers for warmth.

I am a city planner with a master's degree in Urban Policy Studies and I am continuing my PhD studies (Urban Studies/Social Policy) in University of Helsinki. I wanted to combine my love for Helsinki with my knowledge and research about the history, planning and culture of the city, and share it with a wider audience, so I became a professional tour guide! I have been doing small group walking tours for three years.
Being a Turkish guy living in Finland for five years, I bring together the business ethics and punctuality of the Finnish people with the hospitality and warmth of the Anatolian people.

Emek is very knowledgeable and we learned so much in a relatively short amount of time. His education and background make him the perfect guide to host this tour. He only books small groups, which makes it comfortable and allows for a discussion within the learning experience. I would recommend his tour for anyone interested in learning about Helsinki and the Finnish culture!

This tour was one of the highlights of my week in Helsinki and I really can’t recommend Emek highly enough. His education and background make him uniquely well-qualified to discuss the fascinating history of this beautiful city. But it’s his warm, engaging and easygoing personality that really made this tour so special for me. It was like walking through the city with a friend - and an extremely smart one at that! This was the best 3 hours I could have spent at the outset of my time here. Thank you, Emek!

The tour was very interesting with lots of anecdotes. We were in a group with no particular history lovers but we all felt we learnt something in a playful way. Emek is a fantastic story teller and he is really passionate about his subject with lots of knowledge and very accessible. He is an excellent pedagogue and we all appreciated the tour. We highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn in a lively manner the history of Finland.
