What you'll do

There is so little time or opportunity nowadays to experience the countryside and coast at night, away from the blinding glare of street lights and vehicles.

My Night Hike on the Jurassic Coast takes you to a section of coastline that is completely free of all light pollution and rich in wildlife.

We will follow well maintained tracks and paths from the village of Worth Matravers in Purbeck along the ancient Priests Way and down a winding valley to the wave-washed rocks at Seacombe Cove.

From here we walk along a fenced clifftop path back to the Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers and on the way I tell ghostly tales of the shipwrecked sailors and smugglers that haunt the surrounding cliffs and valleys

Along the way there is a possibility of seeing a variety of nocturnal wildlife such as deer, badgers, bats and owls.

If we are lucky the sky will be clear of clouds and I can tell stories of how the constellations were named and give mind-blowing astronomical facts and figures.

At the end The Square and Compass provides a warm and welcoming drink, pastie and usually a roaring log fire.

Where you'll be

I have lived near Worth Matravers for the past 23 years and know and love every path, cove, cliff and copse. My tour takes you to places that many would not discover on their own even in daylight, let alone at night. It is a truly exciting and inspiring experience that everyone has to try.

The night hike with Barry was an incredible experience. He is so knowledgeable that the whole 3 hours was super informative. Barry is also a fantastic communicator (a career of practise!) which made the time fly by. Highly recommended!

We loved this walk, it was magical from the stars, the wildlife and the history to Barry’s fantastic story telling. A rare opportunity to see a breathtaking part of the world in a dramatic night time setting. Barry was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and the perfect guide. Nice easy pace of walking too. Can’t recommend highly enough!

Amazing and very different experience. Barry was very flexible and we actually ended up changing the night of the hike due to a poor weather forecast. Barry also gave us some great tips for things to do the following day. Would definitely recommend!

Fantastic! A unique experience for all of us. Barry shared his brilliant knowledge as a geologist in a very interactive/enjoyable way. Didnt even realized that it took us 3 hours exploring the place. Definitely recommended!
