Night Hike the Jurassic Coast

Dorset, United Kingdom

Experience hosted by Julia And Barry

3 hours
Includes equipment
Up to 5 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

There is so little time or opportunity nowadays to experience the countryside and coast at night, away from the blinding glare of street lights and vehicles.

My Night Hike on the Jurassic Coast takes you to a quiet part of coastline that is completely free of all light pollution and rich in wildlife.

We will follow well maintained tracks and paths from the village of Worth Matravers in Purbeck along the ancient Priests Way and down winding valleys to the wave-washed rocks at Seacombe or Winspit Coves.

From here we walk along a fenced clifftop path back to the Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers and on the way I tell tales of the shipwrecked sailors and smugglers that haunt the surrounding cliffs and valleys

Along the way there is a possibility of seeing a variety of nocturnal wildlife such as deer, badgers, bats and owls.

If we are lucky the sky will be clear of clouds and we can enjoy some wonderful star gazing.

At the end of our walk, COVID restrictions and time permitting, The Square and Compass provides a warm and welcoming drink, pastie and usually a roaring log fire.

Other things to note

The route follows well maintained paths and tracks for the entire route but it is often VERY muddy and slippery so please bring suitable footwear with good grippy soles.

Bright and comfortable head torches can be provided but bring you own if you wish.

Where you'll be

I have lived near Worth Matravers for the past 25 years and know and love every path, cove, cliff and copse. My tour takes you to places that many would not discover on their own even in daylight, let alone at night. It is a truly exciting and inspiring experience that everyone has to try.

Firstly, Barry was very accommodating when we asked to rearrange the walk due to inclement weather and we were so grateful that we were able to find another date that worked well for us all. Barry is a treasure trove for local knowledge, he immersed us in both the history and mystery of Worth Matravers and the Jurassic coast. Plus his astrology knowledge was astronomical! We were made to feel safe in a very unfamiliar and novel environments. Having never experienced a night hike before and being from the big smog of London, we were amazed with how beautiful the area of Dorset is in the dark, as well as providing us with an opportunity to exercise mindfully and experience every moment without distractions. It's safe to say, if you visit Dorset and don't take a night hike with Barry, you will be missing out on a very special experience (even if you are visiting during the winter months)!

Amazing! We are a family of 5 including 3 teenagers, who were sceptical of a ‘walk in the dark’! But they were fascinated by Barry’s local knowledge, by the opportunity to see dinosaur footprints, the quarry, stories of smugglers and ‘hairy Harry’s hand’ and visiting a quarry, together with having stars and planets pointed out to them and seeing the sea reflecting in the moonlight. A wonderful 3 hours that sped by and the kids want to go again in the spring or summer as well as in the daytime. Thank you to Barry for a wonderful evening!

What a fantastic Night Hike in beautiful Dorset led by Barry, a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide. The planning was very efficient with accurate and timely meet-up instructions. The equipment (torches) were sanitised and very useful. The hike is from 7-10pm. The time passes so quickly because you are immersed in local history, geology, fossils, folklore and astronomy. Barry is an amazing story-teller and shares his lifelong learning passion by sharing his depth of knowledge about his local area. The walk itself in fields, on public footpaths and climbing country stiles was lovely on a half-moon night in October. The sky was lit up with stars, planets and Barry even pointed out a galaxy for us. I won’t explain all the stories he told; you need to go on the hike to hear those(!). Suffice to say, we were all enthralled with the variety, interest and his enthusiasm which was infectious. Barry was also very good with the teenagers on our hike - patient and really got them involved. Most of all, this is such a unique experience. Who else do you know who could share their knowledge of the World Heritage Site of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, at night, than Barry? It is no wonder that the reviews are all 5 star and my review simply follows suit! The three of us want to do it again as soon as we can and have a list of people we want to bring with us. We can’t thank Barry enough for such an imaginative and interesting experience. This really is the stuff memories are made of!

Barry gave very clear instructions about the location and was there to greet me on arrival. It was an interesting walk with many local insights and quirky stories to entertain the small group of us on the night hike. Enjoyable and a highlight of my trip away. Lovely to walk through the countryside at night.
