You can either bring your own fabric (approximately t-shirt size in cotton, linen and rayon only) to dye or buy napkin size cotton fabric, t-shirts or scarves from me (depending on its availability). The used fabric is good (let's give a new look to old pre-loved piece!) but if you are bringing new fabric, please make sure you wash it well (ideally in hot water) to remove any starch/production residuals before coming to the class.

After you tie fabric, you will repeat "dye and oxidize" process until you are happy with the depth of blue shade you get. This class will take 2 - 2.5hours.

You can bring your dyed piece home with you at the end of the class (they are still wet but you can dry it at home). I will explain how to wash it at home and about care instruction of indigo dyed pieces.

Please see my instagram page @jalakbali_byrumi first to get some ideas on what you can create!

My name is Rumi living in Bali since 2011. I started to design for my own clothing/homeware label and then started to dye fabric in natural indigo as I fell in love with this colour from the plant and the way of making this dyestuff. I use locally sourced natural ingredients to make my indigo vat.

I teach how to shibori (tie) and dye fabric in my indigo dyestuff. This is a great way of giving new look to your old beloved pieces as well as making something new by hand dyeing. Yes you are going to be upcycling, reusing and loving again your beloved pieces even more!

Where you'll be

Our rustic home/office is located in a quiet local village in the west coast of Bali. Our house is made from reclaimed wood, antique panels, shipping container and collection of beautiful second-hand materials. We collect rain water and use it to rinse dyed fabric.

What an inspiring place. There is so much more going on than tie-dying. It was a pleasure being there, look around and think about Do It Yourself dreams coming true. Rumi is not only showing how to tie and dye. She knows a lot about the processes needed for exracting the colour and colouring fabrics. We had a very good time!

This indigo workshop offered a special surprise, being taught by a lovely and intelligent Japanese woman, committed to sustainable practices that show a care for the earth. I brought 2 T shirts and absolutely love what I've created with Rumi! I have some indigo dyeing experience and was seeking some special tips and guidance, which she gracefully provided. Very inspiring! The workshop was held in the open air, also quite lovely!

What an interesting, informative, and fun experience and one of the highlights of our trip. Rumi is a font of knowledge and conveys her passion with calm, encouraging enthusiasm. The two and a half hours just flew by as we prepared our fabric and dip-dyed it several times before admiring the final outcomes. Rumi is such a gracious host too, and answered every question patiently, showed us the awesome treehouse and also the indigo plants. We will be back for more next time :-)

Rumi was a great Indigo dying teacher! I really enjoyed my experience as she taught me a lot about the process and helped me get started on a design that worked for the dress I brought to dye. She also shared a bit about herself and her home with me which was very interesting, as she and her husband constructed most of it out of found materials!! It was great to see samples of her own work and also what’s possible through a book she shared with me. Overall it was really fun and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re interested in a creative and fun activity!!
