What you'll do

Classes are taught by local ceramic artists who volunteer their time, and 100% of net profits to charity. Paseo Pottery has joined the rank of a growing number of businesses embracing a radical form of conscious capitalism: cover costs, then donate rest to improve society.

After setting you up with a beverage (a variety of intoxicants is offered, and you're welcome to BYOB as well), your teacher will take you on an insider’s tour of the studio, teaching briefly about the production process—throwing, trimming, drying, bisquing, glazing, and firing. Then you'll get right to playing in the mud!

During the class, you’ll get to throw on the wheel or hand build or perhaps a bit of both. Before the end of the class, you’ll choose your favorite glazes, then over the coming weeks we will walk your works of art through the rest of the process. If you're not from Santa Fe, we can ship your pieces to you when they’re ready. (Shipping is $25 for up to 2 students to the same address.)

Angela has been a ceramic artist for decades and her work is influenced by years of travel. She recently returned from a journey around the world during which she hiked the Inca Trail, snuck into a communist headquarters in Bulgaria, rode camelback through the Sahara, caught the swine flu in Istanbul, was chased out of the Grand Mosque of Uqba, lived on a vineyard in Portugal, taught at a tribal school in Rajasthan, biked through floating markets of Thailand, and communed with snow monkeys in Japan. Angela looks forward to hosting fellow travelers and being part of your Santa Fe experience!

Where you'll be

Paseo Pottery is housed inside a rustic little adobe built in the early 1900s in the railyard district of Santa Fe. The space includes both a working ceramics studio and a retail gallery. In the studio member artists design and create (think muddy mayhem: whirling wheels, fiery kilns, and sundry clay-coated potting paraphernalia), while in the gallery finished pieces are displayed beneath the soft glow of farmhouse chandeliers.

Our experience was led by a volunteer Kim. I really enjoyed it and she was helpful when I needed it. I highly recommend this and would love to come back again!

Super fun throwing pottery! Brought a bottle of vino and learned some new techniques. Instruction was just the right blend of teaching and figuring out what works for each individual. Thanks for a great time! The trimming, glazing and firing are all handled by Angela and her team. Great way to spend a few hours on Valentines weekend! Cheers! Greg and Christina P.S. - Remember to tip your instructor!

Liam taught our class and was very knowledgeable and patient. We got to spend the majority of the time working on the wheel with the clay and not just standing and watching him. We also got to bring our own wine which was nice 👍

This was a great experience for my partner and I! He has some experience working with clay and I was a complete beginner. It was really cool to be able to make two different items using different techniques. The instructors were very engaging, enthusiastic, informative and kind. I was having a bit of a challenging time but the instructors stayed patient and helpful. The drink selection was of variety (n/a as well) and the group atmosphere was fun with a wide range of ages. I definitely recommend this experience. Thanks again to the instructors who volunteer their time!

I actually had Lauren for a teacher and she could not have been better. She was patient and attentive the entire time. I signed up for this solo and was a little worried about being the only solo person there but Lauren made me feel right at home. I’m not sure I’ll ever be a real potter but the class got me out of my comfort zone and gave me a new appreciation for this style of art. 10/10 - would do again in a heartbeat.
