What you'll do

When you arrive, we will greet you with a cup of tea or coffee and homemade sourdough bread all made here in the farm kitchen. Then we will get you suited up in gear suitable for being out with the animals. We will provide waterproofs if required and usually have spare welly boots to fit if you'd like to stay as clean as possible.

We will then head out to the barn, where we will walk you through how to hand milk our dairy cow, Honey. She is a lovely natured cow who will stand while you give milking a go. Then we will walk out to the field where you can hand feed some of our Soay sheep. We will also visit our small herd of milking goats for various goat shenanigans. We will then head to meet BoyBoy and Loretta our adorable KuneKune pigs, who love company and a good scratch.

After feeding the sheep, we will head to the chicken coops where you can collect eggs and meet our range of chickens, ducks and geese. If you aren't allergic, you can see our bee hives and our extensive veg garden, before we head inside for one last cuppa before you head off.

Other things to note
Please contact us if you have allergies.

We follow stringent COVID guidelines and have out extra cleaning and disinfecting procedures in place. We have indoor and outdoor seating for tea and coffee and ask that while inside of the farm shop or workshop space, you keep your mask on until seated

We are Kat and Kevin, passionate smallholders who moved to our small farm about 5 years ago- adding dairy goats, sheep, a KuneKune pig, chickens, ducks, geese, cats, and our beloved milk cow, Honey. We grow and make most of our own food and love to share that passion with other people. Kat is an author and photographer who specialises in craft and DIY how-to books, online courses and events. From the farm studio, she hosts popular workshops and weekend long retreats on crochet, sourdough bread making, cheese making, foraging and supper clubs. Kevin is our resident extrovert and poo shoveller, who loves to tell you about his love for his goats.

Where you'll be

Our type of farm is locally called a croft. It is a traditional type of small, self- sustaining tenant farm that has existed in communities like ours for hundreds of years in Scotland. We offer a glimpse into how these farms exist as part of a larger traditional hunting, farming and forestry estate and also what it takes to live the "good life" that many people dream of.

I was asked by my husband which was the best bit of this experience and I had to say 'all of it'! The food and chat was great, the hands on experience with the animals was brilliant, we learned a lot about the self sufficient / smallholding approach and our hosts were really open about how it's all worked for them. I had a really great time.

Simon & Stef,

We had such a great morning at the farm with Kat & Kevin. They have worked so hard, and have managed to create a fantastic experience, providing a true insight into farm life. It does not look easy! We enjoyed seeing the personalities of all of the animals from the friendly chickens and ducks to the mischevious goats and the tiny new lambs. Today I milked my first 'extremely patient' cow :) Boy-Boy the pig was our favourite! I would love to head back to the farm for one of their 'forage your own pizza' nights and left with a sourdough starter. This was really fun. If you get the chance to, do it!

Kat and Kevin were so welcoming and friendly. The experience was fantastic and felt very personalised. We were welcomed into their home and plied with tea, coffee, freshly made bread and cake, which was all lovely. We left with quite a few of their home produces - which are all delicious. It was great to hear Kevin's stories of living and working on their farm and he was happy to answer any questions we had. Both Kat and Kevin are full of character and very funny. They certainly made us feel at ease. They're clearly very passionate about what they do and it was great to get hands on with the animals. I'd definitely recommend this experience for a day out - and it seems they have quite a few other courses/experiences running at Gartur Stitch Farm too. It was great value for money and both myself and my boyfriend had a brilliant time. Managed to get a few selfies with the animals too! Thanks very much!
