What you'll do
During this experience, you will try a lot of delicious Korean foods and explore some of the local area. You'll also be able to study and understand a bit of Korean. It's an easy language to learn and I will introduce and share special stories. I will teach you quick and practical Korean and you'll be able to read hangul—the Korean alphabet—which will help make your travel easier. I'll also prepare some tools and educational materials. After our short lecture, we'll explore the Jungbu Market and you'll practice buying ingredients using your newly learned Korean expressions. The market is a large dried seafood market and you'll see many food ingredients. When we're finished shopping, we will cook together at my secret space—an open kitchen in the market. I will choose the menu depending on the date, but one fixed menu item will be dalgona or ppopgi—a Korean candy made with melted sugar and baking soda. It used to be a popular street snack in the 1970s and 1980s, and it's still eaten today as a retro food. It is also a lot of fun to make. So why don't we explore this interesting market together?
I am a chef and owner of OME cooking lab, a company that creates cooking programs. During graduate school, I majored in traditional dietary lifestyle food. I was a member of the Korean Education Club at my university and I've had many experiences teaching Korean. After traveling to over 20 countries and attending many cooking classes, I decided to open a home-style cooking class with my big love for food. For this particular experience, I have also opened a kitchen in the market. With a warm heart, I would like to share Korean food and food culture with visitors.
