What you'll do

Come with me on a gentle half-day walk in the mountains above Cusco, either in the morning or in the afternoon. This lovely, quiet walk is a perfect introduction to walking in the highlands. It follows a gushing stream in a beautiful picturesque valley. The valley runs from the hills above Cusco back to Cusco, but it is so untravelled that it feels as if it were a hundred miles from the city !

We meet in Cusco (at Iglesia Recoleta) and take private or public transport for 15 minutes out of town and up the hill. Once at the starting point, we edge around a ruin onto a little-known pathway, and proceed back down the valley by foot, following the stream through lush terrain, a forest, and past some striking Inca ruins.

We stop at the ruins to look around, and then we keep going on a track that flanks a land-slipped mountainside until we suddenly step out of the valley and into Cusco.

* Forgive my English; it is a work in progress.
Other things to note
The walk is safe! If you are not too fit or still acclimatising, this is a good, gentle walk for you.

Hi, I'm Fortunata. I am a friendly, happy and chirpy Peruvian woman. I come from a remote, Andean rural village. I speak Spanish, Quechua, Italian and some English. I have been working in tourism for ten years and I have been guiding treks for two years. As a local guide, I know the mountain treks around Cusco inside out. I want to take you on beautiful secret walks which are off the beaten track and rarely visited by other tourists.

Where you'll be

The whole hike is deep in a valley surrounded by towering mountains and cliffs. We follow a track parallel to a gorgeous stream all the way. After an hour of walking we arrive at Inca ruins that are rarely visited.

Fortunata’s tour was amazing and will be a highlight of our trip to Peru. The walk itself follows a river most of the journey and meanders through beautiful forest and lush meadows. The whole time you are seeing Incan structures along the hillsides. The main event was (probably?) around halfway and was a spectacular Incan ruin that must be a well kept secret because we were the only ones there. It’s worth noting that the entire hike is downhill so you really can’t go wrong, it was our first day in Cusco and used it as an activity to acclimate to the altitude. If you enjoy hiking this is a great, convenient tour with an amazing guide!

Fortunata was so sweet, welcoming and knowledgable. I asked her in advance if I could bring my dog and she allowed me to. My dog loves to hike and we both had an incredible time. Fortunata brought some snacks and we relaxed for a little while on a hilltop. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great experience. Also, note that Fortunata does not work for a tour agency, so you will not feel rushed and very personalized.

Our hike with Fortunata was one of our favorite excursions in Peru. Not only is she a delight to be with, she shares her deep passion and knowledge of the land and plants that she grew up on. We love taking local buses, but they can be a challenge to navigate. Guided by Fortunata, this was a perfect short bus ride to the hike's location. This beautiful, flower filled hike helped acclimate us for our Machu Picchu excursion. Fortunata is a delight to be with. Her English was better than my Spanish, so we had fun learning from each other. She is a modern, driven woman with a rich traditional Peruvian family farming background. We feel so fortunate for the opportunity to spend time in the countryside of Cusco with such a fascinating, friendly person.

The best opportunity to get to know the area around Cusco where you would usually not go. Fortu is very kind and helpful person. I really enjoyed this hike! Recommend it to everyone! :)
