What you'll do

Before you see, learn the basic knowledge!

Seoul is a 600-year-old capital city surrounded by the 18.6km-long Seoul City Wall. Everyone who wants to discover the real old Seoul has to visit the Bukchon (the noblemen's village) and its neighbor with understanding of geography, history, and architecture. Every alley sings with its unique poem and every hanok depicts a vivid spirit of the resident.

By easy but profound lecture of the Bukchon, you can have the overall live knowledge of major palaces, old and new Seoul, and traditional and colonial architectures. Surprisingly you'll also find the economical relationship between Hanok and Hangul (Korean alphabet). Learning Hangul is a freebie of this program. If all participants settle, this explore can be extended to serendipitous survey of real Korean meals at participant's own expense.

Get your chance to explore this marvelous historical city with the advanced knowledge!
Other things to note
Anguk is the nearest subway station. The lecture will take about two hours. Bukchon is a hilly area: wear comfortable shoes and be physically fit enough to explore the old streets.

Exploring narrow alleys and listening their hidden stories are my favorite part of traveling. I hope to share my knowledge of Korea, Seoul, and Bukchon with city nomads who are hungry for distinctive experiences in Seoul. I provide a hanok for travelers to Bukchon. I may introduce you to the best first step for exploring the real Seoul. I'm very excited to meet real travelers.

Where you'll be

This experience will take place at a hanok owned by a descendent of the CEO of Gunyangsa, the construction company that developed most of the hanok areas in Seoul in the 1920s. It is located on a hill and provides a splendid view of the old city.

My partner and I really enjoyed his short history lesson. I am pretty familiar with Korean history and my partner was not. Both of us got a lot out of this experience. For me, it was great to hear anecdotal details of Joseon dynasty, and for my partner, he had a clear understanding of timeline on how Joseon evolved. Andre was well prepared for his lessons (i.e. he had props that helped us to understand the context of history) His lesson ranged from history, architecture, people's movement, language.. it can go on! Highly recommend this class :D

André was a great experience host. He is very kind, intelligent and knows the history really well. My husband, friends & I wanted to do this experience to learn more about the Korean history of Bukchon/Seoul and we’re really glad we did this experience since we learned so much. Andre lives about a 10 minute walk or less, from the top of a hill where you can see all the Hanoks (traditional Korean house) and can take great photos. You can also get great photos from the window of Andre’s kitchen during his Bukchon lesson. He was so kind to serve us coffee, orange juice, water, tea and traditional Korean rice cakes.

I loved this experience! The history lesson was more in depth than I thought. Andre is very knowledgeable and engaging. I visited the places that he explained and knowing the history of the landmarks really enhanced my sightseeing.

Had a great time with Andre in his Hanok. He is very knowledgeable of the history of Korea. He uses materials like maps and drawings to help you understand the talk better. I have learnt a lot from it. He served coffee and snacks too! Even though the session was supposed to be a 2 hour session, he was very patient to answer all of my questions and we talked for about 3 plus hours. I would really recommend this session if you really want to know about Korea History. He really knows a lot of things...
