What you'll do

I swim in the open ocean almost everyday and you will jump in with me. Prior to when we meet I will discuss with you your conditioning and your experience level. You need to be an active swimmer and have some experience with waves and current. We will swim anywhere from 3 to 4 or more kms with the goal being to enjoy the water and learn about open water swimming. Of course depending on your ability and on the day we can go longer and harder. Whats makes the venue unique is that we will swim to the Ilha de Campeche, a gorgeous nature reserve 1.5 kms from the beach at Campeche. I provide swim buoys and if required will provide a swim wet suit rental.

You will learn about reading the waves and the current, sighting, open water breathing, navigating on the water, and ways to get in and out depending on the local conditions. I will take pictures of you in the water and on the island.

The session will last from 2-3 hours with time to warm up, walk on the island and after our water session either get a hot coffee or a cool bowl of Acai.

Again to fully enjoy our session you should be a strong swimmer. If you can easily swim an hour in the pool you should be good to go.

I am a lifetime open water swimmer and resident of Florianopolis. Originally from New England I have lived, swam, sailed and surfed the World. Every year I do a new crossing swim; Gibraltar, Tahiti to Moorea, Sardinia to Corsica. I train almost daily in front of and around A Ilha do Campeche, that beautiful island just off of the Atlantic coast of Florianopolis. I help triathletes get more enjoyment (and speed!) from open water swimming and educate kids and adults about how to enter the ocean with waves and currents. In short I want everybody to enjoy the ocean safely and be a 'waterman'.

I had a magical experience swimming to Campache Island with Nathaniel and his friends. We had perfect conditions and I felt safe the whole time. I love ocean swimming but I would not do it alone and this experience was perfect. Thanks!

Soon after booking my experience Nathan connected with me to make introductions and to understand more about my swimming capabilities. I’m primarily a recreational lap swimmer with some open water (lakes and lagoons) experience. This was my first open water ocean distance swim. A day before the experience Nathan reached out anew to provide weather, current, and swell updates. I happened to be staying in an Airbnb near Nathan’s place on the water so he invited me to meet in person that evening. We chatted for some time about the technicals of open water swimming and Nathan shared some of his own background and experience. We also agreed on the time and starting point for the next day. The following day we met up at the predesignated time and location to begin our swim. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather and light winds. Prior to commencing, Nathan gave me instructions on how to handle the surf and current. He talked me through different sighting techniques and gave me aiming points for our swim. Nathan is very experienced in open water swimming and I never doubted his aptness. We started our swim on Campeche Beach breaking through the surf. The waves were barely a meter high and the surf easily traversable. The distance to Campeche island was just over one mile (1.6km). For me, being a novice, it took some time to figure out the timing of the current in tandem with my breath, stroke, and sighting. After about 20 minutes I began to feel more comfortable with my rhythm. The most nagging obstacle was the cold of the water. The water temperature varies between 60-70 degrees with some sporadic changes that would catch you by surprise. Throughout the swim, Nathan was always within a few lengths of me. He is an exceptionally fast swimmer and could easily monitor my progress. He also happened to be a decent videographer and photographer for the journey. He carried with him an orange dry sack that resembled a buoy. Partly to alert boat traffic (which is ever present) and also to carry some equipment. After arriving on Campeche island we warmed and stretched in the sun on the islands sole beach. After a sufficient recovery period we hopped back in the water for the return trip. Once we closed in on the shore, Nathan gave advice on how to angle into shore using the surf and ways to navigate the tumble of white water. We successfully arrived back to the staring point. After a warm parting, Nathan followed up with some pictures and data from our trip. Overall it was a good first challenge for what I hope turns into a lifelong hobby. Nathan really made the experience worthwhile and was a wonderful guide through what is surely a physical and mental endeavor. Nathan’s well spoken, personable, and inviting personality added to the uniqueness of this experience. Do not forego the opportunity to spend some time with him before and after the swim! Must haves: Goggles, Swim Cap, confidence in the water. Nathan is fluent in Portuguese and English. Muito Obrigado Nathan. Até mais!

I'd say this experience is a must for everyone who feels confident about swimming a distance of 3+ km and who comes to Floripa! It is hard but very rewarding and on top you learn a lot about swimming in the ocean. Nathaniel is super-professional, passionate and a great motivator - this helped me to overcome challenging situations from start to finish. In preparation for the swim he contacted me several times in advance and also provided me with good tips for swimming spots on the island. I couldn't imagine a better coach!

Just coming back from the open water swimming experience with Nathaniel. I wanted to swim to Campeche island but was afraid to do so on my own. Nathaniel is a trained swimmer and has tremendous experience swimming in open water. This made me feel very secure. He taught me how to read the current and the waves, and how to swim more efficiently in open water. Overall, it was a great experience that I'll repeat when I return to Florianopolis. Added bonus, Nathaniel speaks perfect French and was super-friendly :)

Obrigado
