What you'll do
We’ll start the tour by learning about the rich, historical context of Denver's Japanese-American community at the last remaining section of Denver's onetime Japantown, Sakura Square. Afterwards, we'll visit Pacific Mercantile, Denver's longstanding supermarket filled with countless Japanese goods, and hear from its fourth-generation owner. Our tour will conclude with a visit to the ornate Tri-State Buddhist temple, which celebrated its one-hundredth anniversary last year.
I'm the founder of an outbound travel company currently working with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and spent my adolescent years growing up between Upstate NY and Tokyo, Japan. Since 2017 I have been living between Denver and Tokyo, opening up conscious channels for travel and tourism between our respective nations. I am a firm believer that people-to-people exchanges play a great role in positive international relations (at least equal weight as government diplomacy) and that responsible tourism also can play a key role as a catalyst for peace and development in our world. I look forward to showing you how it is being done here in Colorado with Japan!
A Traditional Japanese Sweet
Where you'll be
After World War II, a thriving 9- block Japantown area sprung up after Governor Ralph Carr spoke out against incarceration and welcomed Japanese-Americans (JAs) to Colorado. To this day, third, fourth and even fifth-generation JAs enrich this city with cultural traditions and events. Unbeknownst travels will get insider access to this and their understanding of Denver will move away from the broad, stereotypical images and landmarks of this state
