What you'll do

New COVID precautions thru 2020: Class size is now limited to two. We will wear masks. 'Non-couples' will have 6' buffer in a bright, very clean, well-ventilated studio.
Send a message if you have any questions.

All it takes is desire. I can show you how to fearlessly complete an acrylic painting even if you’ve never painted before… even if you don’t think you have the talent. I'll show you how to ‘read’ a photograph, mix colors, handle a brush with confidence and most important... discover your own style!

Great class for all levels - experienced painters will get new techniques to up their game. I’ve been coaching emerging artists for ten years to enthusiastic reviews.

We start with an intention to like what we do - the Bob Ross concept of 'no mistakes' and a quick intro to tools. Ten minutes in you'll have a brush full of color and a way to see separate layers in a landscape photo. I'll demonstrate each layer as we go step by step to quickly build 'abstract' puzzle pieces of color from shadows to highlights - ending with tips for final touches to make each painting uniquely yours. Every student I've taught has completed a painting that looks better than the reference photo and you'll be stunned at how good you really are.

Acrylic paint is non toxic and dries quickly, so you'll walk out with that wonderful feeling of accomplishment and a surprisingly okay work of art.

My 40 years as an artist & illustrator inspires a thoroughly rewarding morning.
My first adult painting class was at age 6 in the 60s, BA in Art in the 70s and had a full time art biz in the SF Bay Area for 35 yrs doing fine art, murals & portraits. I painted 50 stage sets in N California theaters. As a 6 year rep for Grumbacher Paint I taught beginning classes, advanced workshops & intensive art retreats in the Sierras. Winning Humorous Speech competitions in Toastmasters suggests I'm entertaining.
These high-energy acrylic lessons for beginning - advanced adults are limited to six per class. Everyone gets lots of one-on-one instruction!

Where you'll be

I have a bright, clean, comfortable classroom downstairs for up to six students (now two per class for social distance thru fall? 2020). in my home in the burbs of Woodstock - just 2 miles from town center. No paint fume smell at all. A pellet stove warms the room in winter, there's a restroom next to the classroom and off street parking.

As others have said, you will end up leaving with a pretty decent finished little painting at the end. The original photo that we were all going from for inspiration was not all that appealing as a photo, but as Mernie correctly predicted, our paintings all ended up being lovely interpretations- each with their own style and flair. We enjoyed our time.

Highly recommend this experience with Marnie! She’s a very talented artist and just a nice person to spend an afternoon with and learn the basics of acrylic painting. My husband and I were lucky to spend our class with just her but I am sure she would be able to multi task wonderfully with a bigger group. We also brought our skittish pup and she was very sweet to him (as was the cutie Faun).

Fun experience, came out with a better painting then I expected! The lesson was just my boyfriend and I, so it felt very personalized. Thanks Mernie!

Had a great time painting with Mernie! I am probably the opposite of a painter and did not have high hopes for my painting, but I was floored by how well it turned out! Mernie gave expert guidance that pushed me to try new things and make improvements, even when I felt like I had better leave my painting the way it was, for fear of messing it up. Great experience!

I thoroughly enjoyed my painting experience with Mernie. She is very knowledgeable and I felt I could paint for hours. The time flew by. I am a first-time painter, so I learned a lot. I attended with my sister and two friends. There were three other guests as well. We all painted something unique and special. I would definitely do this again. In fact, I picked up an easel to try to paint at home.

Such a fun experience! This is a class where you can let loose and get ready to paint without restrictions or a lot of instructions. It was a little far off the main road but easy to get to. Great for groups or solo!

More tips

You can now arrange a custom private/semi-private class most anytime (message me!). Due to COVID, class size cut 66%, but price only went up 10%. Dress funky as acrylic paint won’t wash out. You'll take your painting home with you along with fresh neurotransmitters from learning a new skill.

What to bring

Just wear clothes it won't matter if you get some paint on.
