What you'll do

We meet outside the front gates of Belfast City Hall. During introductions, you will receive your audio headset. We start by going into the City Hall grounds. Afterwards, we move into the City Centre passing the sites of security cordons and bomb blasts. We travel past some wonderful modern art, winding our way through some of Belfast's famous Entries, historical sights of revolution and intrigue. We move towards the scenic River Lagan which provides great photo opportunities before walking back, towards the Big Fish which you can kiss if you like! Turning back towards the City Centre, we pass the magnificent Custom House and the Leaning Tower of Belfast - The Albert Clock. We move into the vibrant Cathedral Quarter, home to some wonderful mural art and the centre of Belfast's Music, Theatre and Arts scene. Winding through another Entry we pass the locations of incredible historical significance, finishing with a visit to a historic church that sits at the centre of Irish history. The Church is within sight of the City Hall. There's plenty to see on this tour but in Belfast, often it's not what you see, it's what you don't see that tells the real story. We provide a full detailed explanation of what is hidden in plain sight or lies just below the surface and we do so in a fun and entertaining way. The tour is not suitable for children 12 years and younger.
Other things to note
We cover approximately 2.5 miles at a gentle pace. The weather in Belfast is temperate so dress accordingly but we're on the coast and it can rain so come prepared. We provide Listening Sets so I'd advise being at the Meeting Point 5 to 10 minutes early.

We're three Belfast natives, Arthur, Sean & Steve, born and raised in Belfast and we love it - we've even written a book, "The Little Book of Belfast". We're qualified guides with degrees in Law and English. More importantly we've life experiences, being endorsed by a President, playing in rock groups (produced by Martin Hannett (Joy Division, U2)), treading the boards and designing jewellery. Our interest in people is our most important qualification as is our sense of humour. We all share a common humanity on our journey through life and our tours are told from this perspective. We deliver an experience that explains the 'troubles' in great detail but also looks forward and places Belfast within the context of fast changing, post industrial world.

One day before this tour, I did another tour learning about "the troubles". It took me by surprise that Steve's tour is much more than just the troubles. He brings a much longer historical lens, allowing me to see how the land we stand on is formed and progressed. Therefore, I got a deeper understanding of the accumulated injustice that the catholic people faced before the troubles. What is also special is that he untangled the nuances of that dark time, showing me the positive changes that each party was trying to make. The talks around Titanic is another highlight. I got to know the true reason why the ship was doomed to sink. I also appreciate the thick picture book that Steve took with him. With that, I'm able to see what was there back then compared to what I'm seeing now. Steve is also very observant and considerate. Because of all the information around dates and years, my mind is busy converting them from English into Arabic numbers. Steve noticed that and started to use numbers referring to the years which is way easier for me to catch up. I'm fortunate to be the only guest of today because of COVID, so I'm able to ask a lot of follow-up questions. So for guests coming to Belfast when all the museums are closed, I would say you won't miss anything if you get the change to tour with Steve. For future guests who are lucky when the city is back to normal, you will miss a big part of the experience knowing the city if you don't book your time with Steve.

Our guide Steven was a brilliant, he has a wealth of knowledge about Belfast and it’s history, and his love of his city and personal knowledge of its troubled past and bright future shines through, and all with a healthy dash of wit and humour, a great tour, even if it rains 👍

I could not have picked a better way to not only get orientated with central Belfast but to learn so much about its history and of course the Troubles. Our guide Steve, went out of his way to ensure we understood the times while doing it at a comfortable pace and tone that felt truthful and fair. He was kind, funny, and a true encyclopedia of local knowledge and history dating from prehistory to the present. It was the perfect way to spend the day, and we went away feeling like we learned so much. Despite the pandemic, I would highly recommend this socially distanced safe and fun tour. I would suggest doing it on your first days of a trip, as our guide had so many great recommendations of places to visit or things to see while you are in the area as well.

We had an amazing tour with Steve who also very kindly arranged for us to do it at an individualized time. Steve has an unbelievable encyclopedic knowledge of Belfast. Most importantly he managed to explain Belfast’s complicated and colorful history in a way that was respectful and considerate to all its citizens past and present. Thanks again Arthur!
