What you'll do

We meet at Makaleha mountain and hike to gather some water from the fresh water spring. We hike another 10minutes to harvest bamboo. I have been making bambooflutes for 20 years so I know exactly what we can use (age, size, color). Every person can pick their own to make an instrument. I explain what is important to know about cutting bamboo. I also explain all the native plants around us - which you can eat or use for healing. I do “La’au Lapaau” which is Hawaiian medicine. I survived 2 years out in the jungle with that knowledge - eating off the land. The hiking part is over and we drive back tomy house, where everybody is making their own noseflute or other instrument. They drill and burn the holes and I help them to find sound.
For a snack we serve fresh Kalo (Taro), Sweet Potatoes (Ualaa), Avocados or coconut candy.
Opening coconuts, Drumming and weaving optional, if we have some time left and if the guests are interested in doing that.

I am born and raised on that beautiful Island of Kauai. I spend two years in the woods all by myself. Since that I want to show people who Kauai is and what she's able too. She helped me to understand what life is and what's important. I love nature and the polynesian culture and I think every single person that is visiting the islamd should experience what Kauai gives me. I had a non profit organisation (the children of the land) where I offered classes of drumming, firedancing, weaving, cooking, planting etc.

Phil was very passionate about his culture and that is what made this experience so special. We got a taste of the culture (literally since his partner cooked us a real traditional Hawaiian meal) in a way we couldn’t have had it in a cultural center or any other activity. I highly recommend it!

I read Phil’s previous reviews and thought I needed this experience. Having been to Kauai six times for multiple weeks each stay, I thought that I knew Kauai pretty well for a visitor. Phil showed us a slice of Kauai that was absolutely magical, educational and inspiring. The bamboo forest hike isn’t marked on any trail books or apps, the fresh water stream provided amazing drinking water as well as crossing opportunities. Along the way we learned about plants, their uses and island history. Phil’s love of and respect for Kauai and Mother Earth is sincere and interesting, he shares his knowledge in a way that is both entertaining and significant. Making the nose flutes and hearing about its history is done right in the comfort of Phil and Julia’s home. The delicious native food prepared by Julia was served at a communal table where we finished our nose flute. For an insider’s spiritual glimpse of Kauai, consider spending a morning with Phil. Mahalo, Phil and Julia!

Their way of life and genuine love of the native land and culture is extremely evident - we learned a lot. Phil’s perspective is inspiring and eye-opening. Thank you for such a special day!

Trekking with Phil in the lush mountains of Kaua’i is a gift not to be missed! It is a journey of the heart that can bring you closer to the plants, spirit and magic that the Garden Island can only grant you. The flute making is also a fun and rewarding process, even for beginners. You get a chance to taste traditional foods, and learn about their history in a warm and personal environment. Highly recommended, Do It!

First time in Kauai and Phil made it very memorable. He knows a lot about flora, native history/practices and gave this experience a spiritual twist. It had rained the day before so we didn't get to do the bamboo harvest, but all the other activities were very fun. Five stars to Phil!
