I was born and raised in the Philippines and five years ago, I moved to New York City. As a passionate foodie, I have searched for New York's best Filipino restaurants and I want to share them with you. I love telling stories about Filipino culture through a dining experience where we'll enjoy both the food and each other's company. I have written/vlogged about Filipino food and hosted private dinners where I tell my guests about what makes our cuisine so delicious.

As a Filipino who has lived in the East Village for the past three and a half years, I was ashamed that I didn’t know about this tour. That initial embarrassment quickly turned into curiosity (and excitement!) that led to spending a Friday night eating food I’ve missed from home. I wasn’t sure what I would get out of it (other than an excuse to eat), but I ended up learning things that I did not know about my own food and culture. Raf clearly did his research, looking to our colonial history to explain why our dishes came to be. He also did an excellent job making everyone feel welcome and included (we were a particularly large group), successfully creating an atmosphere of a “Filipino dinner party at home”. If you’re looking to try Filipino food, this is a great place to start. While there’s definitely a lot more to our cuisine than what this tour can cover, the selection of dishes was both friendly to newbies and familiar to homesick Filipinos like myself. Raf also doesn’t let you go home empty-handed: Make sure you stay ‘til the end for a special treat!

Raf, the host, started the tour by explaining how eating Filipino food is meant to be innately personal. He explained how the best Filipino food can be found in the humblest homes, and how the dining experience is always intimate. His food tour perfectly captured that feeling. Over kare-kare, adobo, sisig, pancit, and halo-halo, Raf shared stories about his childhood, moving to New York, and how his immigrant experience eventually brought him back to his Filipino roots. He also made an effort to know all the participants. After three memorable stops -- where he took us to "different rooms in his home" (you will understand this after the tour) -- our little group felt like a family. Five stars for the combination of an excellent host, fantastic food, and the special surprise at the end.

I'm a Filipino so I already had a good grasp of the food that Raf was sharing with the group. However, his insights on the Filipino-American experience, his deep dive into the food that we were eating, and his personal stories made this tour well worth going even if you've eaten the food regularly before. This tour is a great introduction to those that have never tried Filipino food and also a great trip down memory lane for those that have eaten it before. I learned things I didn't know about. Also loved the little surprise at the end of the trip. Classic Filipino tradition!

Raf's passion for sharing Filipino culture and food was apparent. I loved learning about his background and the world of Filipino food. We went to 3 different restaurants trying different items at each. We even took a detour to a Filipino grocery store when our group showed interest in visiting. Raf was very kind, friendly, and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed my afternoon and would highly recommend this experience!

Raf's food crawl was so much fun! I learned a whole lot about not only the food but the culture of the Philippines and why the food is the way it is. Raf was invested in his guests and made sure we had a good, personalized experience throughout.

The Filipino Food Tour exceeded my expectations. Even before the day of the food tour, Raf was warm and communicative, so I knew I would be in for great, seamless experience. He was incredibly knowledgeable about each dish and sprinkled in personal stories of his childhood and family, so I ended up learning so much. I also really enjoyed my conversations with the other members of the tour. Everything was delicious! Thank you, Raf! :)
