What you'll do

In this unique class tailored to your interests, skills, and experience we will begin with a brief introduction to this artform via a tour of what I believe is one of the more unique collections of multiple media pyrographic art in the world. As we go I will share my reflections on the experiments that have brought me to this point and offer you a short demonstration of how pyrography is done on a work in progress.

From there, we will shift to immersing you into this medium. I will listen to your interests, goals, and questions, get you started on a project of your choice that you will have sketched out in advance, and help you navigate the most difficult aspects and challenges involved in your project. Whether aspiring to try something new, to discover a new niche for your creative energy, or take your work to another level, I will offer you my undivided attention, insights, and lessons learned of 36 years, and the freedom to work at your own pace and take in what most inspired you to come. Whether you share this Experience with a friend or we work together one-on-one, we will use our time to sharpen your skills to enable you too to begin to create images like these.
Other things to note
* Please note that our venue is unfortunately not handicapped-friendly as it requires going up 7 steps to our front porch and another 17 to our upstairs galleries, studio, and Airbnb accommodations.

Since my earliest encounters with woodburning as a youth, its unique aesthetics have captivated me, and through it I've come to feel a deep spiritual connection with nature and the artistry so evident in its fabric--an awareness that adds both mystery and meaning to my art. For over 37 years now, this remarkable medium has continued to enchant me, and I've found as much joy in recent years sharing my knowledge with my students as I have exhibiting my work at the juried fine art shows along the way, where fellow artists, patrons, and judges too have been moved by my work. Whether awarded "Best in Show" or seeing the manifest wonder in the face of a child being told what they're looking at, I've been gratified to feel the connection my work has made with people who too find awe in this unusual art.

We had an exceptionally wonderful time getting a private lesson from David in pyrography. We were beginners, but seeing his art was inspiring, and we were fascinated by the art form itself and excited to learn something new! The Airbnb is also absolutely lovely. I would highly recommend staying there and trying this unique and special experience.

My husband and I found this class on a whim and boy were we glad we did! We were staying in Madison, VA at an airbnb for our one year anniversary and were looking for things to do in the area. We were both very interested in pyrography and were so lucky to have discovered David's studio! Although we had no prior knowledge or experience with wood burning we were super excited to learn all about it! David proved the perfect teacher and we walked away with immense respect for him as an artist and as a person. David's work is breathtaking and it was so cool to see the process from start to finish. We found his home warm and welcoming and did not feel intimidated by his talent, but instead inspired! This introduction to wood burning instilled in us a true love of this extraordinary medium. We would highly recommend this class to anyone who has a love of art, a love of learning, or a love of trying something new and exciting! You will not be disappointed!

David is a very talented artist and teacher. He contacted me several weeks before to make sure we had our piece of wood picked out and our design sketched in order to maximize the time in the class. We first enjoyed a tour of the beautiful work he has done that is displayed throughout his house. He let us use his nice wood burning tools and guided us as we wished. He provided some yummy snacks/drinks and was very personable. FYI he and his wife also host folks in their home via Airbnb so you could combine a stay with an extended time to work on your project. Harrisonburg is a cute college town to explore while you are in the area as well. Highly recommend!

On a trip to Bridgewater, VA, I decided to schedule a "class" at The Fine Art of Pyrography. I had to look up the word to ensure I knew what we were signing up for. As novices in the art of wood burning (i.e. my husband and I knew very little), we were comfortably surprised that David was completely on board with our level of understanding and listened extensively to us to determine what we wanted to achieve during our visit...which could range from learning by watching presentations and looking at many completed projects to actually participating in a project of our own...which we chose to do. David emailed me to suggest how best to prepare for our visit to make the most of our time. We came somewhat prepared with a sketch of what we'd like to work on; although I didn't pay close attention to the best type of wood to bring...but David gave us detailed instruction on how to create the best result with the wood we had. We learned a great deal in the short time we were there (differences in woods/grains, hardness and what heat works best as well as seeing a vast array of other options one may combine with wood burning to create exquisite art). Above all, we had FUN and that was the most important thing. David was very patient and explained things in terms we could follow. I am now going to purchase my own wood burning equipment so I can continue to learn and make future projects. It was one of the highlights of our trip and I would highly recommend spending the $$ and time to participate in one of his personal classes.

David was very communicative and helpful in learning how to foray into the world of woodburning. For a complete newcomer, the guidance was much appreciated and made for a seamless experience from the planning phases to the actual class. David was accommodating in providing some snacks/beverages, and giving a fascinating tour of his gallery full of meaningful and incredibly well done pieces. The class itself was a great introduction to techniques; David showed us a demo of some of them on his talented pieces-in-progress and helped us to apply those to our own projects. You must take this class if you’re coming to the Shenandoah area! Super thoughtful host and an inspiring teacher! Thanks for everything David!
