What you'll do

Enjoy a chronological, walking tour of old Wilmington. I will share with you facts about the founding families and the architectural beauty preserved in their historic homes which line these brick streets. We will also discuss the social and economic implications which shaped the Port City including African American, Jewish, and European contributions, the railroad, the Civil War, and World War II. We will conclude with the decline and subsequent revitalization of downtown. The 2.25 mile tour usually takes a little over 1hr and 30 mins to complete.
Other things to note
Summers are hot and humid! Your experience will be outdoors, so bring water, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and an inquisitive mind! We do not enter any houses. In the event of bad weather, tours may be postponed, rescheduled, or canceled. My schedule is flexible, message to inquire about specific dates and times.

Highly recommend this tour, it's clear that J.R. is a local with a deep knowledge of his home town. Every house in historic Wilmington has its own story, and J.R. was able to tell each one by heart.

J.R. was very kind to wait on us as we were running a little behind. He led us around town at a great pace and gave a historical and architecturally detailed tour. Learned so much!

JR offered a well-organized, insightful presentation neatly divided into five chapters as we toured the historic districts. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes that only someone who lived here would know.

JR made it so when I walk through Wilmington now, I don't just see a building, rather I see history. Great tour and insights.

J.R. gives a wonderful tour of historic downtown, loaded with history and information that was fascinating to hear. He also personalized our tour by learning our names and speaking directly to us instead of just spouting out facts in a boring manner (which often happens on tours). He spoke to and with my children directly like they are people too, which was fantastic! My kids came away saying, "Man, I really like that guy!" and "What a great tour guide!". Considering nearly all of my kids are teens, that says A LOT! He taught us southern lingo and gave us recommendations of things to do and see while we were visiting Carolina Beach. We couldn't have asked for a better tour!
