What you'll do

Like any great food tour, you should arrive with an appetite for chocolate! You will meet me and the group at a central location in downtown Hilo and enjoy a nice stroll through the historic Hilo Bayfront. The total span of the tour itself is 1 mile roundtrip.

We will visit two of the Big Island's best artisan, bean-to-bar craft chocolate shops who use cacao beans all grown and fermented on the Big Island. Our third stop, is a shop that is dedicated to carrying only the best locally made items. Our last stop, carries all natural items.

You will learn and see the machines involved with the process, see them in action, understand the science involved with each step and be able to taste the final product.

Both chocolate shops are different and have a variety of artisanal chocolate to taste and purchase. From chocolate covered macadamia nuts, to dried local pineapple slices dipped in chocolate, to a multitude of chocolate bars with different inclusions, all the way to tasting cold brewed cacao tea or a hot chocolate or mocha made with Hawaiian coffee AND chocolate, your taste buds are in for a treat! This tour is a lot of fun and very stimulating. Prepare to get chocolate wasted!

It was a lot of fun spending g the afternoon with Jahnavi. She was right where she said she would be and was so welcoming. Our group was just my wife and I so it was like having a private guide thru the world of chocolate making in Hilo. Her passion for the process and product shown thru during the entire experience. Jahnavi had a lot of information to convey about how chocolate is made and all the variables that can affect the outcome. We met several members of the local chocolate community and got to try many samples. All in all a very fun experience. She even arranged for the workers in a small chocolate factory to sing Happy Birthday to my wife! Thank you, Jahnavi!

The tour was great, and we really enjoyed our time with Jahnavi. She was incredibly knowledgeable and had a real passion for chocolate. However, from reading the descriptions and reviews of others, we expected to receive more chocolate included in the price of the tour, not just the free samples at the shops we visited. We don't regret going going on the tour, as we got to see more of Hilo than we would have seen on our own, and being guided by a local was a big part of that. We also came away knowing a lot more and having a much greater appreciation for chocolate.

Doing the tour with Jahnavi was one of the highlights of our trip! Not only did we learn a lot about local chocolate production and the process of getting chocolate from plant to delicious treat, we learned a lot about Hilo as an area. Our biggest regret of the trip was not doing this tour earlier because Jahnavi filled us in on so much local knowledge! The tour makes you feel like you're really in the know as Jahnavi takes you from shop to shop with everyone greeting your group with friendliness and insider info. Walking behind the counter at one shop to take a look at the equipment and try some of their product as they make it really makes you feel like a VIP. Speaking of samples, I would recommend coming with an empty stomach because there is a lot of opportunities to try chocolate in forms you wouldn't even think of! If you like learning, chocolate or ideally both this would be well worth your time!

Super fun experience. Maddy gives you a short tour around Hilo while discussing cacao culture. She will point out local trees and edible plants that grow right there in town. Maddy is very knowledgeable about the local farmers and chocolate makers in the area. It’s a wonderful and delicious experience that you shouldn’t miss.
