What you'll do

The Experience
After being greeted on the farm, guests will be introduced to the goats while they are still in a fenced pasture. Once the goats are released, we will follow them in their meanderings while gently leading them to where we want to go (open meadows, woodlands, pond) depending on weather conditions and the state of the terrain. As we shepherd the goats, we will observe what they are choosing to eat and how they are interacting with each other. Guests will learn to listen to their bells to locate them and to call them. Moments of blissful silence will alternate with passionate conversation about what it takes to grow healthy food. The walk can take up to 2 hours depending on the weather and everybody's disposition. You will be participating in the goats' meal plan, so we will set out on time, at 10am. The goats are hungry in the morning!

Pets and Children
Unfortunately, pets are not welcome due to the high level of interaction with the goats. This experience is best suited for children ages 10+.

What to Bring
Please cover your ankles, legs, and arms for protection against brambles, burrs, and bugs. Hiking shoes or boots are best, they are sturdy and will provide good support for the walk. I always encourage bringing a water bottle and a seasonal hat.

Meet your host, Judy

I grew up in the High Pyrenees where the Commons still exist and the herds happily roam the range in the summer. A shepherd and dog often accompany the ruminants in order to guard, milk and steer them towards new pastures.
While the Commons no longer exist here in the Catskills, at "Roam on the Range" our goats have access to 30 open acres and are free to access the diversity of forages required to meet their individual needs and tastes. They live the good life. Come live it with them and experience the shepherd way!

Judy’s not lying about dressing right - boots were the right call but also made the experience more enjoyable because I never was worried about stepping in mud, especially since the goats sometimes were the ones calling the shots in terms of footing. Truly a great time though, and a meaningful glimpse into how a small, local farm makes it. We also perfectly timed our visit for some spectacular fall foliage, which was an incredible bonus. Learned a lot about farming, got a good walk in with some goats, and Judy was always ready to walk us through every step of the way and answer and questions. Highly recommend!!

Judy is a sage...full of insight, wisdom and knowledge about the land, her farming methods, the humane treatment of animals and so much more. When asked in life who you'd like to have dinner with, Judy should be at the top of anyone's list. She's lived more lives than most of us ever could dream of, and she's not settling down just yet -- there's always more to learn!

We had an AMAZING time with Judy and her goats. Judy's property for one is absolutely beautiful. It was so interesting to get to experience goat herding and learn about what Judy does on the farm. It was definitely an unique experience I'd recommend if you're in the area.

This was the coolest experience I've ever done. Judy is incredibly knowledgable and so fun to spend time with. She taught us about her farming philosophy, sustainable living, and all things goats. The goats themselves were delightful, and we got a ton of 1:1 time with them while walking through Judy's gorgeous property. If you're thinking about doing this -- do it. You won't regret it.

My wife, teen girls and I had a really lovely morning hanging with Judy, her goats and the rest of her animals. It was a simple but special few hours, we learned some interesting things about farming, and also had the privilege of herding her 13 goats out for their morning meal. My girls love animals, so they loved being so up close and personal with the goats...and in such a gorgeous valley and setting. Def a fun, and off-the-beaten-path idea for anyone who just wants to meet someone new and do something different.
