What you'll do

After visiting 150 countries, veteran travel writer and author Bruce Thoreau Northam rediscovers his historic and overlooked corner of New York City’s Lower East Side below Delancey Street. His new, one-of-a-kind walking tour starts near the East River Park Bandshell (Amphitheater) and ends above Manhattan’s East Broadway F-train subway station. The two-hour odyssey mingles offbeat locales, history, untouristed establishments, fun facts, and tales of NYC and beyond. This unconventional excursion transitions through several wildly different worlds, and the route and content have nearly zero crossover with any other tour—it goes behind the scenes of NYC’s uncharted “lower” Lower East Side. Chances are you won’t see any tourists until the tour’s finale.

Other things to note
Getting to Sacred Heart Convent (71 Jackson Street; zip 10002) across the street from Manhattan's Corlears Hook Park is off the beaten path, so add 15 minutes to your travel time unless using Uber.

Where you'll be

Exploring this authentic and undiscovered corner of NYC’s Lower East Side with a travel expert includes a “dive” into the East River and its crossings, beholding one of the city’s oldest housing projects (and its requisite, authentic bodega) and the grand architectural landmarks of centuries past that survived the bulldozer, untouristed ultra-Kosher businesses, off-the-radar parks/streets/eateries, into/under the hardcore version of Chinatown.

Bruce has created a fabulous tour of the Lower Eastside! Informative, fun and introduced us to many new experiences in NYC. We loved the interaction and many venues that Bruce showed us. We even took his suggestions for following days in Manhattan that made our vacation super special. Take this tour!!

My husband and I had an excellent time with Bruce. We learned so much about our new neighborhood on the tour - both in terms of history and great food/drink recommendations. Highly recommend!

Bruce met two of us on a cold blustery but clear day, that was not an ideal day for a two hour walking tour, but he never gave us the impression it was a hassle for him. He was full of interesting stories and insights and information that I had never known about an interesting part of the origins of NYC. Particularly interesting was his tour of a part of Chinatown that I didn’t know existed. We also got a great sense of the early Jewish immigrants and the very diverse community that remains in the area.

Reviews can’t capture how special Bruce made our day :-). The day after we enjoyed a whole range of activities we would never have known about if not for him. I look forward to another tour with other family and friends!

Book this over any other tour of lower Manhattan. This was the best ‘locals’ tour I’ve come across in New York in my 8+ years of visiting the city. We didn’t even feel like we were on a tour, but rather hanging with an old friend. Bruce is knowledgeable about food, arts and history, and truly knows the local lay of the land. He took us around noteworthy sites that are unsigned in the LES, important to both US and world history, and knows the real Chinatown like the back of his hand. I guarantee that 90 per cent of locals wouldn’t have even have 10 per cent of Bruce’s knowledge. He also leaves you with a great list of things to do for the rest of your trip.
