What you'll do

"Your favorite toys are the toys you make yourself!"

In this experience, young people design and sew their very own "Pillow Pal": a soft, lovable friend with a hand-drawn face, floppy arms and legs, and trimmed with colorful ribbons.

After designing a face on paper, we trace it onto the fabric. Great big eyes and wide smiles...or a snarly scrunched up monster face: their choice!
After choosing arms and legs, the fabrics are carefully pinned together. Sewing on a machine is a new experience for most young people: they are intrigued and learn very quickly! A variety of trims, fake furs, and ribbons are opportunities for the young people to exercise their decision-making skills.

The highlight of this project is when the young people finish sewing.. and turn their pillow right-side out. Their eyes light up when they see the arms and legs pop out!

As the stuffing goes in, the pillow springs to life!
The Pal gets a name, and finally, the young artist signs their name across the back.

A pocket holds a hand-stitched blank book with prompts for creative writing about their Pal's adventures.

This is more than a "project class".
We talk about design, line, proportion and color. An exercise in 3 dimensional thinking, and sharing ideas and opinions with other students make this a fun and educational event!

Prefer to use recycled fabrics? We can do that too!

Meet your Host, Meg

Host on Airbnb since 2015
  • Identity verified
Meg has spent 30 years designing, sewing and building all manner of artful home furnishings. "Pillow Pals" are her first design project specifically for young people, and she has adapted her unique design aesthetic and color sensibilities into these soft and colorful projects.

What makes Meg such a great teacher is her finely- developed sense about knowing when to "step in" and when to "step back". She understands that there can be a bit of hesitation when learning new skills, but also understands the THRILL of "I did it myself!"

It's fun to watch the students as they thoughtfully consider their design choices, but THE BEST PART is when the students walk out of the workshop, with HUGE smiles on their faces and their arms wrapped tightly around their Pillow Pal!
