What you'll do

Our adventure leaves from Lagos about 5 hours before sunset as we plan to stop the 2nd highest peak in the Algarve right as the sun is setting. The windy road to Monchique takes about 40 minutes from Lagos and once there we will exit the Van on a quiet side street of Monchique. We will walk through the quaint streets, admiring the locals lush gardens and beautiful tiled houses. Once into the center of Monchique we will then visit our friends who will provide our guests with a medronho tasting while explaining the fascinating history of this ancient little village that has seen so much change. However Monchique has been able to keep much of their ancient traditions alive. After trying an ounce of melosa and an ounce of the infamous medronho we will set off to explore - the now derelict - 17th century Franciscan convent that overlooks Monchique. After coming back into town from the church we will set off up the other side of Monchique. We will walk amongst cork, eucalyptus and pine trees all the way to the top before sitting down to enjoy a nutritious tapas style dinner at sunset. After dinner we will hike down at twilight to the van.

Where you'll be

Will be going to Monchique, a quaint little mountain village about 40 minute drive away from Lagos. Monchique is steeped in history as the Romans first came here and realized early on how special it was. They established the "Caldas de Monchique"(spa) as they believed and still do that the water has healing powers. When we enter the actual town of Monchique we will visit our friends at there local shop which displays all the regional delicacies.

Had a fantastic time from start to finish with Chris. My partner and I have spent a month in the Algarve and this is one of the best things we've done. It was just the two of us on the tour, and Chris made sure the whole day was as engaging and fun as possible. Communication was excellent with Chris making sure we had everything we needed with us , the town and the hike itself were beautiful and even though it was cloudy we were lucky to get a stunning sunset. The food was absolutely delicious as well, and extra impressive for eating it on top of a mountain with a gorgeous view. Couldn't find a bad thing to say if I tried. If you're into walking or hiking at all, you'll love this and Chris is great and effortless company. Hand on heart recommended.

Chris is a very friendly, energetic guide to show you around the beautiful hotspots in and around the Algarves. We spent two separate days with Chris who took us for hikes on the seven hanging valleys and another one near the quaint town of Monchique. Throughout the hikes we found that Chris was very knowledgeable about the Portuguese culture always being able to advise our group on the best ways to explore the Algarves. The Hikes are not very challenging for an average person however Chris plans and takes into account in case individuals struggle with plenty of time for breaks to rest and is very supportive in case anyone is struggling. The Hike itself was quite scenic and informative as Chris was always armed with facts about the local history and cultural significance of the areas we explored. Once at the top, the view is to die for and as the sun sets, there is a pin drop silence in the evening making for a reflective time as you sit and enjoy the delicious dinner. The food is definitely the most surprising element of the trip. Especially after being tired from the hike, Chris has prepared some incredible gems waiting for you to try and take back home with you! The food is simple yet so delicious and nutritious it was thoroughly enjoyed and compliments the scenery on display. All in all it had been a fabulous experience and Chris made the experience even more special with his insights, we couldn't recommend the trip more!

We had a wonderful hike around the picturesque mountains of Monchique and we watched the most amazing sunset whilst eating a delicious spread made by Matt and Chris. They were great to chat to and were very well informed about the area. We also enjoyed the honey and Medronho spirit tasting where we learnt all about Medronho which grows natively in Portugal and how it’s made!

We had a great time with Matthew and Chris on this trip to Monchique and the beautiful view point in the area. From the beginning you could tell that they felt passionate about showing tourists lesser known areas and enjoyed their work. Communication prior to the trip was exceptional and they went above what we expect from a tour guide by seeking some trainers for myself for the hike, as I had only brought birkenstocks with me for my holiday, plus also giving cafe & restaurant recommendations for our trip to Lisbon. They were both relatively knowledgeable about Monchique but also had great stories and interesting chat about their travels elsewhere. We felt safe on the hike - even when walking back to the van in the pitch black - they provided additional lights for us to use to help us find our footing and did not rush any member of the group. The view point was simply stunning and the homemade food that they provided was delicious! The wine was also a lovely touch :) the price for this trip was great value for the length of trip and the amount that was included and we would recommend to anyone who wants to explore further afield whilst staying in Lagos.
