This is a wonderful experience. The class begins with a 30-minute tour of the history of artwork and tapestry in the Yucatan, including lots of visual aids from several books. Then Mayra teaches you how to make traditional Mexican tapestry. My wife and I both really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed talking with Mayra about precolumbian Mexican history and about her work as a photographer of indigenous Mexican traditions. She has lots of good recommendations for things to do in Merida and outside of Merida. Also, there is some cool artwork in the studio including things former students have made for her and things she has made. (For example, I asked her where she got her shirt, and she had made it herself. It was a cool shirt too.) My wife ended up finishing the tapestry she started over the remainder of our time in Merida. I would recommend this to anyone. Even if you aren't part of a group where someone is a strong Spanish speaker, this would still be enjoyable. But it's even better if you can. Mayra is very knowledgeable and conversational, and she greatly enriched the experience we had in Merida.

Super fun class! I left with a project to work on and feeling inspired for future projects. It was also great to learn more about Mexico and living in the Yucatan.

Highly recommended for all handwork enthusiasts! You don't need advanced skill or experience with embroidery, either - Mayra has thoughtfully tailored the experience so that if you've so much as sewn on a button before, you'll be fine. My Spanish isn't very good, and that was no problem, either. I enjoyed the experience very much, and felt that I came away with a new skill.

A unique and fun experience —and a great way to practice your Spanish. Mayra explained a bit about the history and importance of embroidery for the indigenous groups, which was very interesting. She is an excellent embroiderer and ,equally Important , a very good teacher of the craft. We talked about lots of things and the time flew by. Now i have a fun souvenir and a new skill. And i learned some new things about the people of Mexico.

The history and stories about the origin and style of Otomi embroidery was really interesting, and so much fun to be able to create my own piece of art in that style.
