What you'll do

We will meet at the launch ramp of either Lake Valley Reservoir or Spaulding Lake, will share a little bit about ourselves and what we are passionate about and ask you to share about yourselves, what you are passionate about in life and what inspired you to want to kayak mountain lakes. We will tell you about the wildlife on the lake and give you tips on sighting the eagles and the osprey that nest here. We will talk through the safety aspects of the kayak, adjust life vests, share paddling tips and answer questions. We will give you a visual tour around the lake and point out the landmarks before we launch. If you are a novice at kayaking, no worries! Going out you'll learn, and Janine will coach you on paddling tips and control. On the way back, you'll be in control and asking about the next kayak trip! After exploring coves and kayaking on the lake, we will stop at the island, build a fire and share a light meal. Guests may choose to take a swim or sing around the fire. If you prefer a romantic sunset alone, we can set up seats for you in the best viewing spot for the sunset (or moon rise) and we'll tend the fire! If there is a day or different time you'd like to go out, please inquire! If there are high winds, rain or snow, the kayaking experience will need to be rescheduled.

Janine

I am the founding artistic director for a non-profit arts organization and my husband, Ken, is a family business consultant. We have been teaching in one capacity or another for 35 years. We kayak these lakes three to four evenings a week with appetizers, firewood and ukuleles in tow for inspiration, peace and sunsets on the lake and the island. Once a month we make a late night run to watch the full moon rise. We have 4 large and 2 small kayaks available.

Where you'll be

Watching the birds and wildlife along the shores as you paddle tends to bring life into perspective. Surrounding hills protect the reservoir and high winds are rare, making this lake the perfect place to explore inlets and islands. If you fish you’ll catch brown bullheads and rainbows. The lake is on the North Fork of the American River. It sits at an elevation of 5,840 feet and when full, holds 8,000 acre-feet of water. It is beautiful...
