What you'll do

I will show you my personal Alaskan life at my off the beaten path homestead, just south of Talkeetna.

Of course you will meet my Alaskan husky sled dogs. They are a rowdy bunch, but also super friendly and some (Sam and Flora) even think that 50 - 60 lb is a perfect size to be a lap dog. You will meet each dog individual and learn about sled dogs in general.

You will also learn about how the dogs are an integral part of my life and will sit at my kitchen table to see what it takes to live in Alaska year round without having any utility connections (no running water or electricity network hookup).

I have setup many systems to still live a relative modern life in summer as well as in winter. You will learn about how me and the dogs collect our own water, haul our own firewood and building material, and how I grow, ferment, bake and gather my own food. Besides helping me with these tasks the dogs also provide me with winter transportation to explore the incredible back-country of Alaska in winter.

It is a unique opportunity to see how and why we live here in the far north. Come visit me and my dogs.

Note: Guests have to be interested in working dogs and off-grid living.

**COVID-19** Please bring a MASK for the indoor part of the tour. Social distancing and washing hands protocols will be followed for the outdoor part of the tour.

Together with my 8 sled dogs I live on my off-grid Homestead in Talkeetna and love to show you the real authentic Alaskan lifestyle I have.

After living in major cities my whole life I found a way to live more simple and be more self sufficient here in Alaska. I love to show people a piece of Alaska not easy to encounter but we Alaskans fell in love with, our dogs and off-grid cabins (homes).

My dogs are working dogs, high energy, super friendly and also my family. This makes the experience of meeting and learning about sled dogs very personal.

What a magical day! It's very difficult to describe, but Iris gave to us out of her heart and soul. Experience of a livetime, and with DOGS! Sammy was the best sled dog ambassador ever!

Iris was welcoming and open about living off the grid with eight sled dogs. I highly recommend a visit with her if you want to see human potential, realized. We are capable of so much and Iris shows this in her own way. Fascinating for those interested in another way to live a life of fulfillment, and in tune with nature.

The "off the grid" life which Iris has built is quite amazing and she is constantly making improvements. Being a musher, Iris explains how her relationship and training of her sled dogs requires much more than just having a pet. Visiting with her was a delightful and enlightening experience.

Visiting Iris's homestead was in many ways a life-changing experience for me. Afterwards, my whole mind was screaming, "I want to do this too!" And of course I have already made different choices with my life that I wouldn't undo. But the experience filled me with staggering respect and amazement at what she does.

Iris’s experience is among the most sincere and illuminating things our family did in Alaska. My wife and I were fascinated with her and her life, our kids were captivated by her dogs. We have 4 kids and it’s sometimes hard to find activities that they all love. They were unanimously entertained and inspired at Iris’s...we couldn’t get them to leave!
