About your host

The 3 of us are Inari fanatics who love researching the Inari faith. We each have a different perspective on what's going on at Fushimi Inari. Learn how politics has affected the shrine with Lee, a Waseda University political science graduate who used to make documentaries for Al Jazeera. Take a comparative religious stance with Gulay, who will draw on her knowledge of archaeology, Byzantine…

What we’ll do

Dragons. Waterfalls. Political control. The Fushimi Inari Shrine is so more than its famous torii gates. Most people are satisfied by a scenic view of Kyoto and the forested trails through the mountain. We'll go through the main shrine, but we'll also go deeper. Much deeper. Visit tree gods and get your divination interpreted for you. Drink healing water from a hidden waterfall. Meet the locals…

What else you should know

We like to allow you to savor the quiet paths after the summit so this hike may end up to 30 minutes later than scheduled. The end time depends on the pace of the other guests on the hike.

What I’ll provide

Mosquito repellent (for the summer months)

What to bring

Good walking shoes (hiking shoes if possible)
A bottle of water
Some ¥5 or ¥10 coins as offerings, and about ¥500 to get snacks or refreshments from the huts along the way (optional).
¥300 as a donation to the Zen temple we'll visit at the end
