What you'll do
In my class, you will not be just watching or eating, but if you wish, you can challenge playing a role of ceremony host, or also free to ask the reasons of my ceremony or kimono behaviors, or try these elegant actions yourself with my support. Not being so strict about rules, but instead I will try to help you feel a sort of mindfulness within the calm, inspiring ambiance I create in my tea room. First, I will explain the whole flow of the tea ceremony at anteroom using explanatory material for several languages including English, Chinese, French, Italian, Korean, Spanish, and German, but you do not have to memorize all. Then we will enter the tea room. Please sit in your comfortable position.(crossed legs are also OK) . Japanese-style chairs are also available. Of course, you can try sitting on your knees! I will offer Japanese sweets, and I will bring several items from Mizuya ,and purify them with Fukusa or hot water, and make a Matcha tea. First you will taste Japanese sweets "Wagashi”.Then,in turn, one by one,you will be tasting Matcha tea,but don't worry! This is the class for beginners, anytime you are free to ask questions, redo, enjoy and make most of the chances in the room! When all of you have finished drinking,I will purify the tea bowl and tea scoop. Later, the I will put the items back to Mizuya.
Want to experience the "real authentic" and cozy ambiance of tea ceremony? Then my class, with small group at old townhouse may be ideal! I started Tea ceremony at the age of 15, after long years’ practice, given chamei, certified master title “Koyo" in 2010, by the Iemoto (Grand master) of Nara-based Chuguji-Goryu (famous Chuguji-temple) school. I put more importance on your own concentration or mindfulness, therefore do not worry about correct behavior. Like many guests already reviewed, please appreciate in your own way the ambiance of the tea room and how we/you serve tea to each other, with less words.

Where you'll be
Nara is often said as enough to spare 3hours just by watching Great Buddha and deer, but in fact has authentic cultural roots of Tea Ceremony, Wagashi, Buddhism and Shinto ,etc. born before Heian-era of Kyoto capital. "Kanrin-an" is located at east end of Naramachi area, which is appraised as nostalgic space for promenade & shopping. Enjoy the traditional small ambiance (Wabi-sabi) here and feel how the people lived more than 60 years ago.
