What you'll do
I'm going to take you on a tour of Chinatown that will change the way you see this fabled New York neighborhood.
As someone who identifies as Chinese American and has researched, photographed, and written about Chinatown at length, I offer a different perspective. I focus on the social and cultural history of the community.
Together, we'll walk the historic streets, and you will learn about how and why the Chinese came to America, the rise of Chinese restaurants and what working conditions are like for the people employed there, political issues and activism within the community, and how new generations of Chinese Americans are returning to Chinatown and revitalizing the neighborhood.
If you would like to take the tour at a time that is not offered, please message me and I will try my best to accommodate your request.
Your host
Katie
I'm a fourth-generation Chinese American (I'm half Chinese in case you can't tell) and gave a TED Talk called "As American as Chop Suey" on my photojournalism project about the lives of Chinese restaurant workers.
For many years, I wrote the food and culture blog Five Spice Alley, which was inspired by my experiences living in Chinatown. I'm an active member of the Chinese American community in New York, with strong ties to artist and activism circles.

Where you'll be
We're going to start in a less trafficked, less touristy part of Chinatown so that you can get a sense of what everyday life is like for residents: where they work, live, go to school, socialize with friends, exercise, etc.
As we make our way into the heart of Chinatown, I'll tell you more about the history of the community and share some of my own personal experiences.
We'll end at Columbus Park, a lively area where senior citizens hang out.
