What you'll do

Come and learn the ancient and fascinating method of creating flameworked glass beads (also known as lampworking) - where glass is melted in a flame using an oxygen and LPG torch.

Learn how to make basic doughnut beads and round beads in colours of your choice and how to decorate your bead with dots and spots and stripes. In addition you will learn about safety, tools, equipment, proper lighting and annealing glass beads for strength and durability. All glass materials, gas, kiln firing and and safety gear is included. As your beads need to be processed in a kiln afterwards, they can not be taken home on the day. The cost of *posting your beads to you is also included in the fee. Expect to make about 4 - 10 beads in this time, depending on ability.

*As of March 2019 New Zealand postage prices to the USA have increased dramatically due to security. The price stated includes only non-tracking with a delivery time of 14 days. If you require your bead parcel to be tracked to the USA, it will be an additional charge of NZ $50.

These classes are a private lesson for two hours working at your own pace with glassmaker Jo Tricker. Minimum age is 12 yrs. Come on your own or bring a friend - the torch can be shared across two people if you book two consecutive lessons.
Other things to note
You can park right in front of the glass gates (which you will see as you drive up) and also anywhere else in the complex. A summary of the class lesson will be emailed to you afterwards.

"I am fascinated by glass - by its ability to transform itself from a solid to a liquid and back to a solid again! For me it is the endless fascination of where science and art meet."

I am a glassmaker. I run glassmaking classes as well as making unique glass gifts! I do not blow glass - my works are proudly handmade using kilnforming and flameworking techniques and serve both functional and decorative purposes. I am very passionate about what I do and love to teach and pass on my knowledge.

I have two apprenticeships in Medical Laboratory Technology, a Degree in Literature, a Certificate in Teaching English, and a Certificate in Graphic Design. I have been glassmaking for nine years and have completed master classes in kilnforming, flameworking and casting - learning from both local and international glass artists.

Booked this experience on a whim and I'm so glad I did. Genuinely loved this class, Jo walked me through each step of the process with patience and passion. Can't wait to see my finish beads when they arrive in the post.

Arrived for the one to one lesson, had to sign a waiver but that is pretty standard. Jo showed me all the equipment and explained how the torches worked and provided me with protective mitts and glasses. She demonstrated first and then I was soon trying to form my own beads, you have to be a bit ambidextrous as there is rolling and heating to be done and it is quite difficult but you get a few tries and Jo guided and encouraged me well. I did manage about 5 beads, not quite the bracelet with matching earrings I had anticipated and you cant take them home on the day as they need to be cooked overnight. Jo is going to post them home to England for me as I am travelling. The time flew by and we did go over the 2 hours expected, probably a reflection on my skills! Jo is obviously passionate about what she does and I had a great time, Thank you Jo. x
