What you'll do

We will meet at our cottage near the sea under a tree in our back garden. Here you will be entertained by a musical story performance showing how the original Southern African instruments were discovered and how the music evolved as people migrated to become the musical styles we know today. From tribal to jazz, blues and back to township jives.

After tea and a snack, participants will have an opportunity to make their own version of an ancient African wind instrument (ixilongo) decorate it and learn to play it. This will be your take home souviner. You will be invited to share in an interactive musical jam session. All the participants will be given a chance to play a simple instrument and guided in playing music together in a polyrhythmic ensemble.

Beat by beat we break boundaries and find a sense of belonging in the rhythm of the drum. This is a great opportunity to release stress, find your centre and discover your groove within the whole. You will be taught skills and techniques and be accompanied by strong professional drummers who will help you hold your part.

We felt very welcome with James and Helena. We enjoyed sitting in their beautiful garden and were offered tea and coffee. James told us detailed and interesting stories about the different instruments. Here we could clearly notice his passion for these instruments. More and more neighbours and friends joined us, who also brought their instruments and we had a nice jam session. Afterwards we painted our pipes - what a nice souvenir from South Africa. Thank you guys for this experience :)

This experience was special because of the art of storytelling: we listened to many stories about some traditional African instruments, James performed a kind of theatre play with the instruments, we enjoyed a small private concert, the garden was full of creative art pieces and we even created our own colorful instruments to take home. In between we had a break with refreshing tea and fruits. The whole atmosphere was warm and friendly, it was the perfect morning under the sun of Cape Town. Thank you a lot, James and Helena!

Thanks to Helena and James ! They made this experience a memorable one. They first arranged their agenda to be able to welcome us. The weather wasn’t that good so we started the experience in their musical room, which was very cosy. We felt their love and passion for African music throughout their stories and by listening them perform. As the weather was getting better, we have been able to go outside in their garden, for a little jam session, where we learned some djembe rythmes. We felt really at ease and this experience will stay forever in our mind !

This was plenty of fun, we learned new beats, jammed and had an amazing time sharing stories about South African music and influences. We even took a walk by beach after we were done.
