What you'll do

You’ve seen the major sites in Washington DC — the Capitol Building, the Smithsonian Museums and the thought-provoking memorials — but did you ever wonder about the people who built this great city? Join us on a foodie tour of H Street, the neighborhood that housed the builders and artisans who built the city and made it come to life.

After introducing ourselves at the meeting point, we kick off the tour with a delicious snack from a local grocery store. Then we head to a cafe with freshly roasted, in-house coffee, where we may even meet the unofficial “Mayor of H St”!

We continue to make a loop around the H Street Corridor, visiting restaurants, markets, churches, and historic sites. Our foodie stops vary depending on what is available that day but we can promise a culinary rollercoaster ride through many of DC’s most authentic and delicious neighborhood spots.

Along the way, you’ll hear some amazing stories about the people who used to live and work in this district, learn how food has played a big part in bringing the community together and taste for yourself why DC’s food scene is enjoying a much-deserved resurgence.

After we have filled you up with some of the best food in the city, don’t forget to ask your local guide for more hints and tips on how to get the most from your stay in Washington DC.

I took this tour with Cortland, a DC native, and he was fantastic!! All the delicious food stops along the way so memorable and it was very eye opening to hear about DC from a local. Highly recommend this trip for anyone visiting! (If I could give 6/5 stars, I totally would.)

Our DC food tour of H Street with Cortland was so much fun and so interesting! Cortland is a 3rd generation DC resident and is a weather of knowledge and DC, the neighborhoods we walked through and the people that run the businesses that keep H street thriving! This wasn't a fast paced, rush rush tour. We were able to walk (not run) through the neighborhoods, sit and drink our coffee and eat or food at several of the stops. We tasted local favorites from establishments that have served the community for years. And, we didn't get a one bite taste either! We each had full portions at each stop! It's no wonder that they are still thriving!!

This tour was not what i expected at all!! My girlfriend was trying to surprise me with this tour for my bday. When she told me about it, she told me people have said not to eat at all because you’re gonna eat so much that you’re gonna be full. So on our tour we stopped at 4 places, when I saw other people’s reviews they said they stopped at 6 or 7 places. We saw pictures of pie in the tour description as well, but when we stopped at the pie shop, our guide told us it was closed but we could see it was open, which was super awkward. We also had to share a hot dog at Ben’s Chilly bowl. So the first stop was at a tiny grocery store which was cool but we only had 1 bagel bite. Next we head on over to some Ethiopian coffee shop and it was nice but our tour guide got us basic coffee with creamer, which tasted sour. My gf didn’t even finish the coffee, i did because i didn’t wanna be rude. Then we head on over to the famous Ben’s chilly bowl. My gf was talking to me about this place before heading to the tour so yes i was excited. Why is it that when we get there our tour gives us 1 hotdog that is just average size for ME AND MY GF to share!!!! I’m someone who eats a lot and my gf doesn’t eat much but seriously 1 hotdog to cut in half to share. Our last stop was a mexican taco place, it was good but we only had one taco each. The funniest part is the time when the tour is over, we stopped and we honestly had no idea where we were at and he just says, “some ppl uber back or take the shuttle”. I was so mad because my gf was trying to surprise me with this, but because of how expensive it was for the amount of food we got, I was left disappointed and still hungry. I would say look up and do research and buy your own food than spend money on this tour.

The tour was a great way to get a local's feel for the H Street neighborhood. We stopped at places I never would have found on my own. And the food was fabulous!

We had Leila as our host, and she was lovely! We are locals who have already eaten in all the places we visited, but we still learned a lot on our tour. Leila grew up in DC, knew a lot about the local history, neighborhood, and culture, and was very easy to chat with. We also left feeling VERY full, so just make sure not to eat or have coffee (there is a coffee stop) ahead of time. I think this would be fun for locals or visitors and highly recommend!
