This was a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of a local farmers/fishermen/artisans market, the Saturday Mercado Verde in Puerto Jimenez. Through local organizer Doña Ada (her Spanish translated by Tricia, energetic supporter of the market), we heard the history of the introduction of mechanized farming in the 80s having ruined traditional farming and the economy, and the current efforts to turn that around…..local farmers once again growing food for local needs instead of cash crops, transitioning off of fertilizer and corporate seed sources and gradually returning to traditional methods. A classic example of change begins here. This was a very inspiring experience, one we highly recommend to anyone visiting the Golfito/Puerto Jimenez/Osa Peninsula area.
