Hi, I'm Octavio Irving. 20 years ago I discovered my passion for Art and since then I never stop to create. I have been professor at the Arts University of Cuba and managed the Experimental Graphic Workshop of Havana, there I had the honor to organize the visit of Michelle Obama in 2016. I had been involve in more than 100 exhibitions in Cuba and abroad. Now I managment my own independent project Irving Studio, for the promotion of printmaking and drawing. With Beatriz, my co-host we organize a programme of Art Experiences to support non profit Art projects. Art is an universal lenguage and what I like the most is to feel and share this special connection.

Where you'll be

Irving Studio has been very attractive to all our visitors. It is an engraving workshop built with metal structure (factory type) on the roof of the private house of the artist Octavio Irving. The Martí neighborhood, where the studio is located, is an interesting micro reflection of the Cuban reality, its conflicts and inequalities. We will find strong contrasts within the neighborhood and in relation to residential areas of Havana.

What an amazing experience! I really felt like an artist for the day! It was one of the best mornings I had in havana. I am so grateful to have been able to meet and spend a few hours with the artist Octavio Irving in his wonderful / cool art studio in the marti neighborhood in Havana. You will be able to see his art , take pictures and ask him any questions you may have about art and print making. Octavio and his wife Beatriz are the sweetest people I meet in Havana and they both made me super comfortable... ( I definitely feel like I made new friends today) What a treat to be able to go home with a unique and artistic version of my own travel pictures ( using an engraving technique called collagraphy) I can’t wait to hang them in my home. At the end of the experience, the prints are beautifully placed in a handmade art folder ( perfect for traveling ) printed and embossed in the art studio, each little detail is so precious. They makes a perfect gift! Artist work is also available to purchase, I can’t think of a better, more authentic Cuban gift to bring back home. I will definitely return for the same experience or one of his other experiences. Don’t hesitate... you won’t regret it. Leaving a print... on paper, but also on my heart!

In all my travels this was the most unique thing I have ever done. We had such an amazing time. Octavio and Beatriz were incredible host, they made us feel so welcome in their home and studio. I appreciated not only the experience of making something that I will cherish a lifetime, but also them conversing with us talking about Cuban art, origin of the techniques and culture. If you are looking for exceptional experience this is the experience for you.

Wonderful morning making art and talking about art with people who know about Cuban art. Everything was perfect, the studio space is wonderful, the workshop was very professional and the interaction with Beatrice and Octavio was unique. They are interested in you and try to make the experience unique for you. Being in the suburbs makes it a unique experience itself. Highly recommend doing this great workshop!

We loved our experience with Octavio and Beatriz! They were incredibly friendly and welcoming, picking us up from where we were staying to come to their studio above their home. The studio was incredible, Octavio is a world-class artist and this was a fantastic and unique experience. We love the art that we were able to create and bring home as a memory of our first trip to Cuba.

This experience can be done by anyone from 9 to 99 years old. They picked me up at my airbnb and took me to their amazing art studio that was state of the art in Cuba, they have a laptop and printer to help you turn your normal pictures that you have taken into a work of art by using their process that they explain and show you how to do it and then even let you practice before creating your works of art you will take home and impress everyone you show. I loved how they made you feel like a real friend and not a customer. Worth every cent you spend to do this experience. You will tell all your friend about what you did and be very proud of what they helped you make when you get home.

I have always been curious about exploring alternative processes to print a photographic image. Printmaking is one of those processes that can be used to create a photographic print in a very creative way. Last November before traveling to Havana I saw a post in Facebook about Irving Studio. I got curious and requested information. Then I knew about the workshop "Leaving a print... Photography and Printmaking" offered by Octavio Irving Hernández Jiménez and managed by him and his wife Beatriz. I made a reservation not knowing much about printmaking and how this process could be used to transform a photographic print into a very creative work of art. On November 23rd, I had the great opportunity to attend to Irving's workshop. He first introduced me to his studio, his art work, and to his art project @havana.art.experiences. Then he introduced me to the printmaking process and more specifically to Collagraphy (sometimes spelled collography) which is a printmaking process in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate (such as paperboard or wood). We then produced a print from my photographs. As an artist this was a great opportunity to learn about an alternative photographic process and to get to know about Printmaking in Cuba. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who travels to Havana.
