What you'll do

DTLA is best experienced by bike. Starting at Grand Central Market, L.A.'s 103 year old food hall, we will see the vintage theaters of Broadway, step inside the Victorian era Bradbury Building, famous filming location, and cruise through the Historic Core. Built in the turn of the century Vaudeville era, the former Wall Street of the West, is morphing in to luxury lofts and a nightlife destination, complete with its own Banksy. Its still a little gritty like NYC in the 80's, but we'll point out the best spots to return for a night out. Next we'll take a protected bike lane to Olvera St., LA's founding site; we break here for a little exploration on your own, shop, enter LA's oldest home, Plaza De Cultura or Our Lady Queen of Angels church. We enter the 1940s grandeur of Union Station, before heading over to Chinatown. Next is (Gotham) City Hall, and a pleasant ride though pedestrian/bike only Grand Park. Finally, the museums and performing arts venues of Grand Avenue, the Gehry designed Disney Hall, and The Broad, then cruise downhill back to Grand Central Market. Throughout the tour you will hear history, politics, individual narratives, film locations, restaurant recommendations mixed in with the founding, 1700's to 1800's, turn of the century, roaring 20's, pre and post WWII, and current status of DTLA. This tour has 9 of Lonely Planet's top 10 sites for downtown
Other things to note
Guests should be comfortable riding on streets with/without bike lanes. Guide's voice will be amplified, and there are 10 narrated stops, with a break half way through. Flat route, 8 miles. Please arrive 10 minutes prior.

Art Deco, Mid Century Mod, cowboys, classic cars and Noir are just a few of the things that drew me to Los Angeles 24 years ago. I've spent summers on self supported cycle tours all over the world. Living, teaching and cycling in Downtown Los Angeles, I realized that DTLA was ready for its own bike tour. As a high school teacher, I've developed an academically researched tour, delivered in an entertaining way, on a flat route. Together with my artist friend Jenna, we run Handlebar Bike Tours in DTLA. Where you'll be

Downtown is the origin story of Los Angeles. Los Pobladores founded LA at Olvera Street. The Historic Core is going through a rebirth as Beaux Arts office buildings transform into lofts, Vaudeville theaters reopen as concert venues, old banks morph into eateries, and prewar speakeasies are refurbished for a new generation. Yet Downtown still retains its Bukowski grittiness. We hit the top sites of DTLA, and secret spots not in any guide book.

Easy bike ride, with flexible options. Felt safe and stayed in bike lanes just about the whole time. Intimate knowledge of the theater district, along with views of parks, buildings and the hustle of DTLA

Loved it! Best thing I did in LA. A great bike ride. You don’t need to be an avid cyclist. We went to places and learned things I’d never got in my own. Just the best tour!!!

Going on the bike tour of downtown LA was one of the best things we did on our trip. We covered a lot of ground and Jennifer shared a lot of stories about the history of LA. She also shared recommendations of places to visit. The cycling was just the right amount of activity (not too strenuous). I highly recommend this experience!

This is a great trip to get a local flavor of LA and experience it in a small group. Our tour was a private one of just my wife and myself. This trip is more one designed to see the downtown area using a bike rather than a bike trip. I recommend it to anyone seeking the former.

Great trip, and a fantastic intro to LA! Highly recommend for travelers looking to better understand the city, based on stories shared from a local who cares about and knows her city well (and bonus: you get to avoid the touristy nonsense you get on other tours).

This tour was my second with Jennifer in six months, the first being her arts district tour. There are other downtown tours from which to choose, and I considered each carefully. In the end, I chose to return to Jennifer because I like her delivery style, and I knew she would be full of history, facts, and stories about downtown LA.
