What you'll do

A morning at Bluff Lake is the best way to spend a day in Big Bear no matter what season it is! Spring through fall I lead hikers on tours all over Bluff Lake, the upper portion of Castle Rock and Skyline Trail. This hike can be modified for how easy or hard you want your hiking experience to be and as many miles/hours on the trail you want. The easy version of this hike is an hour, about a two-mile hike over the mostly flat ground, not much altitude gain. This is a great hike for kids. We can even stop on the hike and I’ll teach kids a bit about our local butterflies and instruct them on the best technic to photograph butterflies. If you want to do the moderate hike to upper Castle Rock (Castle Rock is the most popular trail in the Big Bear Valley), this hike is available the same pricing. Us locals prefer to hike a less traveled trail starting from the top near Bluff Lake to Castle Rock. It's prettier and not a crowded hike. This hike has a lot more altitude gain and is about 4 miles round trip. I also offer longer 3-5 hour hikes (and they are a higher fee. Inquire for pricing) and I also host beginner mountain bike rides. (2-3 hours in the saddle) Message me for more info or any questions you may have but really, the type of hike we do is up to you and your fellow hikers and how easy or hard (Or fun!) you want your hiking expirence to be.

I’ve been hiking in the San Bernardino Mountains for 20 years. I know almost every trail on this mountain between Crestline and Big Bear and love to share my favorite hikes with travelers adventuring through our local wilderness. I'm well versed on local flora and fauna and love to share my knowledge with visitors to our local mountains.
Besides spending my days hiking our trails, I also write a column in our local newspaper on the best hikes in the San Bernardino Forest, based on my popular blog, Hungrymountaineer.com.
On this adventure into our local wilderness, I will take you and your group on an off-road adventure to hidden Bluff Lake and we will hike to the largest Lodgepole Pine in our national forest. I also will photograph your whole hike and email photos of you and your guests enjoying this truly breathtaking place .

Where you'll be

We will start the hike near Bluff Lake Reserve. (Where we start depends on how long & hard a hike you and your guests want) This is the prettiest hike in Big Bear. It’s an area that really only locals know about & having a nature guide truly gives you a locals perspective to the hike. There are all sorts of areas along the creek and the meadows where we can explore, and I will take as many photos of you & your group as you want, posed or candid.

Hike was so refreshing.! You just don't want to leave the place and absorb more the beauty of it since it's really total bliss! But we have to abide by our schedule that we just have to brisk-walk around the area. Hope to go back there again since Amber said it is beautiful as well to hike there during winter time where there's snow. Amber was such a fearless guide. She knew the ins & outs by heart! Oh yes, Carlie, Amber's lovable dog, added warmth & fun to our family hike. I highy recommend this hike-- you'll love Bluff lake!

Amber was outstanding. She made us feel welcomed . I came with both of my young daughters and she went a great pace in the snow. We never felt pressured to rush or uncomfortable. Truly a great experience and with her awesome dog and 4x4 truck. I would recommend this to anyone and it is well worth it

I have traveled all over the world and I have found that one of the most important assets in a new area to have is a wonderful guide. Amber is this person. She is not only knowledgeable but friendly and accommodating. We are already looking forward to working with Amber again.

Amber was the sweetest, most knowledgeable guide we could have asked for. We both brought our dogs on the hike as she showed us around the landscape and talked about all the incredible sites around us. Very relaxing and entertaining hike. Thank you so much!

This is a high elevation hike. The hike starts around 7,600 feet and you can get sunburnt quicker at these altitudes so high SPF sunscreen is a must.

What to bring

Sunscreen, bug spray, hat, hiking boots, dog leash, water, snacks, Dogs are welcome on this hike. If hiking in the warmer months I recommend hiking with them on a leash though, as there could be rattlesnakes. There are also a lot of deer in this area. If
