We will begin by going to Vilakazi Street to experience both the historical and current happenings of Soweto. We will go to Mr. Nelson Mandela's house and Mr. Desmond Tutu's home, and also to Mrs. Winnie Madikizela Mandela's home, where I will explain how Soweto started and when and why it was built. We will visit the Shova Lifestyle store, Vilakazi Curio shop shops that have given young and old…

What else you should know

You may have read that Soweto is dangerous, but I can say that Soweto is not so bad. It's not perfect, but it is safer than many European cities. Sowetan people have "ubuntu"—a humanity toward others.

Where you'll be

We'll first go to the home of Mrs. Winnie Mandela, where I will explain the history of Soweto. We will visit Mr. Tutu's home and then Mr. Mandela's house, where I will explain his life and part in the South African history. We will also go to Shova Lifestyle, where we will see and talk about the current youth of Soweto. We will visit the Hector Pieterson Museum to learn about the youth of 1976. We will travel by taxi to most of the locations.
