What you'll do

Be part of the shepherd's work day in Serra da Estrela

In this tour, that lasts from 3 to 4 hours, we will follow the footsteps of the shepherd and his herd, looking for the greenest pastures. Be part of the shepherd's work day, listen to his stories and enter in communion with nature - smell, hear, feel and taste. At the end of the hiking activity, upon arriving at the pasture, we will share with him a small meal.
The money we earn with the experience is not only to pay our work, insurance and the meal, but it is also shared with the shepherd. We live in a unique community and territory and we want to give back to it at least as much as we receive.
Everything can be adapted and customized according to your wishes.
IMPORTANT:
Depending on the weather conditions, the shepherd's convenience, the particular characteristics of the herding activity and the ability of the group, we can follow a different plan or cancel the event. In that case, we will contact the guests and present an alternative date/hour.

We have a huge passion for Serra da Estrela. Our deep knowledge of the community we live in and of the mountain trails allows us to reveal the stories of this territory.
As a journalist, Inês has worked with the community, uncovering their knowledge of flowers, herbs, gastronomy, agriculture, pastoralism and many other activities. Miguel has lived in this mountain since his childhood and has a deep understanding of people, traditions and trails. We also have training in geology and sustainable tourism, provided by Geopark Estrela Association and have the Biosphere certification, granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute, an organization with a memorandum of understanding with Unesco.
It will be a privilege for us to show you the life of a shepherd.

This is a truly magical experience. The hosts, Inês and Miguel are very friendly, thoughtful and knowledgeable. They have a passion for their environment and for the traditional way of life embodied in the shepherd, Sr. Augusto, and his wife. They also took into consideration our dietary restrictions when preparing the snack that you eat once you’ve reached the top. The snack is ample, so don’t worry about having lunch! We are in our sixties and in fairly good shape. We did find the climb of at least an hour straight up the mountain to be somewhat challenging, although the hosts gave us lots of opportunity for breathers along the way. Nevertheless, I think if you have some health or physical issues, this is probably not for you. But it is such a special experience it is definitely worth the effort if you are in good health. Sr. Augusto thoughtfully held on to my arm when we were descending over some slippery leaves. The views alone are simply spectacular. But most special is the insight into this way of life and the ecology of the mountain.

We had a wonderful time Ines, Miguel and our wonderful goat Shepherd. Not only did we get to learn more about the people of Portugal, but we were also able to share stories about our own lives with each other. During the hike Ines was constantly plucking herbs that were growing naturally and sharing them with us. The food was AMAZING and the day was filled with laughter. An experience I will never forget.

Amazing experience! My husband and I would recommended this experience to anyone traveling to Portugal. we were lucky enough to meet the wife of the shepherd as well, as she was making cheese from scratch with the milk of her own sheep at the very beginning of the day. Then we climbed in the mountain with the sheeps and we got a chance to talk to Inês and Miguel who were organizing the experience, but also to the shepherd. The shepherd is really conscious of the well-being of his animals, and is very funny. Taking this experience will for sure give you a deeper understanding of what Portugal really is outside of the big cities like Lisbon and Porto. We had a wonderful weather during this experience, and we had the chance to have a wonderful picnic in the middle of the mountains with local cheese, local bread, local pork meats; and they can even adapt the picnic to specific diets so if you don't eat pork or if you're vegetarian for example they will be glad to provide you with a homemade salad. Definitely not to be missed! ❤️

Simply AMAZING! The whole experience was so thoughtful! We accompanied Mr. Augosto and his sheep on his daily hike to the peaks of the Serra da Estrela. There we had a beautiful picnic with super delicious local products from the mountains (think sheep cheese, olives, wine, fresh bread and homemade gelly's! 😍). The hike itself is beautiful, and Inês and Miguel are such beautiful and warm people who care much about their tradition and culture. It exceeded our expectation and can recommend to anyone!!

A unique and fantastic experience! This is unlike anything I had ever done before and far exceeded my expectations. The care, thoughtfulness, and generosity that Ines and Miguel...and of course the shepherd and his wife...have put into creating this amazing, breathtaking, and cultural experience is evident throughout. If you have the good fortune to be part of this experience, your entire being will thank you. You won’t regret it!

Follow the Shepherd was truly an unforgettable experience and the highlight of our 2-week trip to Portugal. Ines, Miguel and Sr. Augusto and his wife are warm, interesting and generous people who are passionate about this beautiful land and culture. Miguel and Ines shared homemade herbal tea as we climbed, to the sound of bells worn by the sheep and goats and accompanied by herding dogs. At the top of the mountain we enjoyed a delicious meal of cheese, bread, chorizo, fruit and wine. After descending, we visited the home of Sr. Augusto and his wife, who treated us to figs, apples, homemade cheese and a rare glimpse into the shepherd’s ways of life. Magical. A note: Ines and Miguel have a wonderful, spacious home which they offer as a rental, located near the starting point of the adventure. It would be helpful if the rental information were readily available as an Air B&B link, with the experience. If you are considering this, don’t hesitate. This is an experience you will treasure always.
